JULIE MASON
Invitation
You could speak accolades of praise for the musicianship of Andy Brown and Frank Gibson Jr, whereas this is Julie's (pianist/vocalist/composer) album, and on Invitation she litterally shines!

Opening with Bobby Golson's 'Whisper Not', Julie's vocals are sultry and clear. Murray Tanner's flugelhorn adds a subtle, yet exquisite edge to 'A Beautiful Friendship'. A favourite of mine is Oliver Nelson's 'Stolen Moments', that Julie adds some refreshing vocal phrasing, and this features Putter Smith on bass.

I've heard Lani Hall (Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66) and the late Sarah Vaughan sing Bergman's 'So Many Stars', and Julie's rendering is now one of the best.

The Latin tinged 'Invitation' has Phil Broadhurst on piano leaving Julie free to paint her way through a vocal tapestry.

Of special interest is Julie's own 'But Before I Go' that showcases her brilliant piano technique with tone and timing.

Julie is one of our greatest musicians, and this is her debut; an Invitation to you.
