NATALIE MERCHANT
Motherland
(Elektra/Asylum/Wea)
With the three solo albums she has made since departing as leader of the multiplatinum band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant has sold well over six million copies and become one of pop's most acclaimed and intriguing artists. Natalie's highly anticipated new album Motherland is another bold step forward -- a musically adventurous collection of songs that are passionate, shimmering and softly soulful, with lush arrangements and a rich instrumental backing for Natalie's radiant lilt. Elektra Review.I have listened to Motherland so many times now and it just grows on me more each time. Opening with the mystical 'This House Is On Fire', Natalie lays down the ground work for what promises not to be no ordinary album.
Most of the songs are emotionally tinged, and what else would you expect. Natalie's heart has been trodden on so many times...so who would you trust? This theme comes through songs like 'Put The Law On You', 'Not In This Life' and 'Just Can't Last'.
One of my favourite songs off Motherland is 'Build A Levee', but again it is so hard to pick favourites off this awesome album as so many of these songs are soooo good.
