WILLIE NELSON
Stardust
(Sony/Columbia)
If you are not a country fan, but you like nostalgic standards that Nat King Cole and others of his ilk have made famous, then you might find this gem a real suprise. I've had girlfriends who hated country music yet love this album.

Willie opens with 'Stardust' that echoes those "stardust memories", and then he lazily wanders through 'Georgia On My Mind' that he gives a real melancholy touch to. 'Blue Skies' continues in this vain until 'All of Me', which is so romantic it tingles the spine. I can't imagine Willie's version of 'Unchained Melody' being used for the movie Ghost, but that doesn't detract from Willie's great rendition. 'September Song' along with 'Blue Skies' are my favourite tracks on this priceless gem. You can't help feel a certain ammount of joy hearing Willie singing 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street', 'Moonlight in Vermont', 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' and 'Someone To Watch Over Me'.

This 1999 reissue has included extra tracks 'Scarlet Ribbons and 'I Can See Clearly Now'. Sony could have left off the latter.

Booker T. Jones of Booker T. & The MG's fame produced and played on Stardust and he should produce a whole lot more like this as it is right up there with Quincy Jones' arranging. Well done Booker & Willie!
