DOLLY PARTON The Grass is Blue (Sugar Hill/Elite) As recently as September 22, 1999, Dolly Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Parton has given us such timeless classics as 'I Will Always Love You, 'Jolene' and '9 to 5'. Her latest release, 'The Grass Is Blue' is her debut bluegrass collection. Parton has devoted the entire album to the Mountain Music of her childhood. Producer Steve Buckingham calls it "the most inspired work she's ever done." There is a mixture of classics by Flatt & Scruggs, 'I'm Gonna Sleep With One Eye Open, Johnny Bond, 'I Wonder Where You Are Tonight' as well as a cover of the Johnny Cash & Roy Cash, Jr., 'I Still Miss Someone'. Parton does a splendid job reworking songs from her own songwriting catalogue 'Will He Be Waiting For Me' and 'Steady As The Rain' as bluegrass numbers. Parton's new editions to the project, notably 'Endless Stream Of Tears' and title track, 'The Grass is Blue' are fine examples of why this project is accurately described by renowned banjo player Jim Mills as, "One of the best things to happen to Bluegrass in a long time." Superb performances from everyone involved, 'The Grass is Blue' is possible on the way to becoming the most acclaimed album recording of Parton's career thus far.Carole Ritchie carole@promotionz.net.nz |
