Putumayo Presents NEW WORLD PARTY
Various Artists
(Putumayo/Elite)
A celebration of a new global culture featuring hip-hop and funk-influenced grooves from around the world

This latest release from Putumayo World Music welcomes the year 2000 with a forward-looking collection of music that blends tradition with a hip, cosmopolitan attitude. New World Party brings together Algerian funk, Haitian hip-hop, Brazilian R&B, Latin soul and African rap to create a rich soundtrack that is a effervescent and toe tapping addition to any party.

New World Party includes established stars Wyclef Jean (with Lauryn Hill) (Haiti/USA), Miriam Makeba (South Africa), Gal Costa (Brazil) and Dissidenten (Germany) with new discoveries Aby N'Dour (Senegal), Zeca Baleiro (Brazil), Chico César (Brazil), Daúde (Brazil), Los Mocosos (USA), Hamid Baroudi (Algeria), and Ramata Diakité (Mali).

With New World Party Putumayo ventures into new territory, presenting a contemporary sound for a generation where cultural interaction and diversity is the norm rather than the exception. The collection begins with "Pata Pata 2000", a modern version of Miriam Makeba's universal hit "Pata Pata." Artists from around the world have recorded their own versions of this popular song, and on New World Party Makeba reclaims the track that made her an international star with a hip version for the future. New World Party also features an appearance by Wyclef Jean, joined by his fellow Fugee, Lauryn Hill, on a potent Haitian creole rap based on the melody of "House of the Rising Sun."

Wyclef's streetwise hip-hop is heavily influenced by his Haitian heritage, as this track reveals. This is a fresh blend of contemporary global music, New World Party is the perfect introduction to the sound of the future. Abridged by Carole Ritchie
