BERNARD PURDIE Soul To Jazz II (ACT) This is drummer Bernard Purdie's second Soul To Jazz project. The featured musicians are world class i.e. Stanley Turrentine, Vincent Herring, Hank Crawford, Cornell Dupree, Junior Mance, Benny Green and Jack DeJohnette. Soul To Jazz II opens with the Negro spiritual 'Motherless Child' then jumps into DeJohnette's 'New Orleans Strut'. Turrentine's 'La Place Street' is delightfully twin horn blues with a groovy guitar solo from Cornell Dupree. Gospel standard 'Joshua' features the Benny Diggs Singers and moves along at the tempo that is strongly reminiscent of the Grant Green and Herbie Hancock renditions. Soul To Jazz II also features a great rendition of Isaac Hayes 'The theme From Shaft'. If you want an album with blues, soul & jazz, with a hint of gospel then this it. Also 'Pretty' Purdie is possibly the most recorded session drummer in history. Many of his greatest sessions have been for the likes of Steely Dan. Awesome drummer-awesome album!
