Modern Answers to Old Problems
Telarc/Elite Imports
Jamaican ska-jazz guitar legend Ernest Ranglin has now put out an album that is on the cutting edge of hip, and it is full of modern African polyrhythms. Modern Answers to Old Problems features an all-star cast of international musicians, and opens with 'Memories Of Senegal' and 'Outernational Incident', that are reminiscent of the musicianship and styles of Fela Kuti and Manu Dbango. 'Kunene' introduces the delightful African styled vocals of Sylvia Tella, who co-wrote five compositions on this album. Ernest displays some powerfully fast jazz-chord changes during 'What A Day'. 'Sound Invasion' is pure funk. 'Inflight' features the jazz dynamics of Britain's saxophonist extraordinare Courtney Pine; whereas it is the very hip Denys Baptiste (tenor saxophone) who features extensively on most of these sessions. Modern Answers to Old Problems comprises of mostly Ranglin originals. This is a very cool African influenced album.
