Difficult Woman
(Larrikin/Festival)
This is a Paul Kelly album with Renee Geyer on vocals; well not quite. This is a Paul Kelly produced album and most of the eleven songs are written by him bar four.

Difficult Woman is an album about relationships, and that is something we can all identify with.

The album opens with 'Close' that is a warm, loving song; and is followed by the mistakes we make in * 'Careless', Paul Kelly (spoken verse *).

The one song I can really identify with is the title track, as I was once in a relationship with a woman whose emotions were dictated to by her hormones, which was a horrible thing for her, and an endurance saga for myself; yet this never changed the way I felt about her. Paul wrote this especially for Renee.

Renee then performs The Beach Boys song 'God Only Knows', and this is a moving rendition. 'Foggy Highway' is another song that has special memories for me. Renee must have touched a lot of souls with this number. You can relate this to misty journey of life, or the clouded memories of one lost.

'Summer, Winter, Spring & Fall' describes the four seasons of love, and features Doti Caymum on guitar and guest vocals. Renee's own 'Just The Thought Of You' is another deep song about memories. 'Sweet Guy' is about a Jeckyl & Hyde type of guy who can be so loving, yet in a flash can be the most violent man to the one he loves. [Respect rule number one: You can love someone, but you don't own them.]

'Real' is a song about being genuine. 'He was Too Good To Me' is a Rodger's & Hart song that sums up the feelings one can have for the ones they don't necessarily love in return. 'Trouble' rounds off Difficult Woman, and adequately describes the dilemma that faces most couples at some stage.

The many musicians that created the awesome atmosphere on Difficult Woman are John Molo (drums), Jimmy Haslip (bass player for The Yellowjackets), Johnny Lee Schell (guitarist-extraordinaire), Marty Greb (keyboards), Lenny Castro (percussion), Alan Johnnes (guitar & sitar), Paul Kelly (spoken verse *), and various backup vocalists.

Renee is no stranger to rhythm and blues; and on some of her other albums she has put her heart and soul into songs like 'If Loving You Is Wrong', It's A Mans Mans World', and 'Stares & Whispers'. She has been called the Australian Aretha Franklin, a title certainly well deserved. She has some of the best pipes I've ever heard. Also take time to read her autobiography out on Harper-Collins 'Confessions Of A Difficult Woman'; it's one of the best bio's I've ever read.
