DON RIGSBY
DON RIGSBY
Empty Old Mailbox
(Sugar Hill/Elite)
To say Don Rigsby is a Ricky Skaggs clone would be an understatement of this mans talents, but similarities must be made. Don Rigsby presents and performs bluegrass just as Ricky Skaggs presents bluegrass. By stating this I don't mean to take anything away from Don Rigsby, I just wish to compliment him on his technique. Bluegrass is not easy to perform, but to present this compilation as professionally and adequately as he has done here says a lot for this mans talents. Tom.T Hall is correct "Don Rigsby is the complete package, a dedicated clever talent and the complete master of his craft".

The vocals and the backup singing are done with feeling, with a lot of light and shade, and a true balance. All backing musicians handle their task professionally in a faultless masterly manner, and the Empty Old Mailbox CD has been beautifully recorded.

My only criticism of Empty Old Mailbox is that fourteen songs was just a bit too long to play all at once, mind you the bluegrass fraternity and enthusiasts wont mind a bit. I've played bluegrass professionally often in my musical life, so I do respect the fundamentals of what it takes to keep it lively, interesting and enjoyable listening. Don Empty Old Mailbox has all of these qualities, there is something for everyone here.

Tracks I've singled out for special mention apart from the title song are 'These Old Blues', 'Louise', 'Don't Sell The Land', Bad Day In Akron', If I Had A Mother Like You' and 'Here I Am In Love Again'.

Don Rigsby will be around making this good ole bluegrass music for a long long time if this CD is anything to go by, he deserves to be. Marks 7 out of 10.
