COCO ROBICHEAUX
COCO ROBICHEAUX
Hoodoo Party
(Orleans)
Louisiana guitarist and vocalist Coco Robicheaux is the New Orleans Howlin' Wolf!; and this is his third album, and his best yet. I don't need to be convinced how good Coco is; I was converted by his first album Spiritland.

Hoodoo Party opens with the very up 'Burn My Bones'. This is a born and breed Mississippi Delta man who wants to be cremated, and his ashes scattered in the Delta.

Take a moment and remember all the great early blues that you loved from Rory Gallagher, Tony McPhee's Ground Hogs, and Eric Clapton, then listen to 'Real Smooth Talker'. Man! Coco is sooo cool. He really knows how to sell a story in a song.

Junior Wells would have got off on 'Li'l Black Hen', the harp playing is so sweet; this is Coco's 'Li'l Red Rooster', and he even sounds like the Wolf.

'Fair In Love' is so much like Canned Heat's rendition of 'Bullfrog Blues', but who cares? This is great blues!

The title track again is so 'Howlin' Wolf, but with todays technology. 'Hoodoo Party' is a boogie track that will have you dancing in your lounge. This isn't creole, this is blues-rock'n'roll.

Koko Taylor should record Coco's 'Thrift Store Suit'.

Mean Ol' Lady' features another Howlin' Wolf riff, and is an excellent rocker. Coco get's down and funky with 'Mean Ol' Lady', that is so black.

'Decision Blues' follows the same formula, and shakes to a little Coco philosophy.

Otis Redding would have loved to record Coco's 'The Grass Is Greener'.

The backup musicians (Pat Ramsey-harmonica, Steve Howell-drums, Dave Renson-lead guitar, Will Ainsworth-bass, Dave Easley-pedal steel, Chief Smiley Ricks-congas, Rick Allen-organ, Earl Stanley-bass, Skip Easterling-piano-vocals, Tommy Alfortish-sax, and Irene Sage-vocals) play real Sixties blues both authentically, and with feeling! You could go a long way to get authentic New Orleans blues and maybe never find it; whereas this is the real thing, and it will reward you with repeated exposures.

This is my favourite album from 2001!
