FENTON ROBINSON
FENTON ROBINSON
Somebody Loan Me A Dime
(Alligator)
This album opens with the title track that at one time Boz Scagg's claimed he wrote. Wrong! The Soul-King of the blues wrote it years before. Yes it's a Fenton Robinson original. Understandably Boz was certainly inspired by this great song. One of my favourite songs by Fenton is "The Getaway' that is right up there with his rendition of Deadric (Don Robey) Malone's 'As The Years Go Passing by'. This has often been one of my favourite Bobby Bland songs, whereas Fenton on I Hear Some Blues Downstairs is so right for it. Anyway back to this album...A real heart breaker is 'You Say You're Leaving Me' that tells it like it is, and he makes it so personal. An absolute Robinson classic is 'You Don't Know What Love Is' that has been performed by so many great blues artists around the world. With touching songs like this Fenton would have to be the Marvin Gaye of the blues. You can here the T-Bone Walker influences on 'I've Changed'. Possibly the most intimate of songs Fenton ever wrote and performed was 'Gotta Wake Up'. It really displays the struggle in emotions. And finally a song that Stevie Ray Vaughan made immortal; 'Texas Flood'. Well it's no secret that Stevie was inspired by Fenton's version of this great song. The rest is history. This is an album that you will put on 100 times and never tire of. It chooses the time and the mood, and from that you cannot escape. Fenton is no longer with us as this great man died November 25th 1997 from complications arising from brain cancer. Fenton is sadly missed. He gave so much, and got so little in return.
