JOE SATRIANI
JOE SATRIANI
Live In San Francisco
(Sony)
Electric guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani is breaking new ground with the Epic Records release of his first live album. Satriani's "Live in San Francisco" documents an inspired evening at the fabled Fillmore Theater in the fan pleasing two set format he has performed in over the past few years. Originally scheduled for a TV show, the hometown performance grew into much more. Laden with classics, "Live in San Francisco" is a stunning testament to Satriani's longevity and astounding raw ability. From the expansive guitar "vocals" of "Crush of Love" and ethereal wanderings of "Flying in a Blue Dream" to the infectious infernal swing of "Satch Boogie," Satriani's ability to maintain heightened intensity through two sets of flawless performance defies circumstances. Satriani's envelope pushing work on Crystal Planet is perhaps only upstaged by his breakthrough classic "Surfing With the Aliens," during which he baits the audience into an enthusiastic impromptu melody exchange. Whether blazing through a familiar progression or taking off on an improvisational tangent, Satriani's performance is impeccable. Considering his influences, Satriani's stage prowess is no surprise. On "Live in San Francisco" Satriani forces himself to the edge once again, with magical results.
