SAVOY BROWN
SAVOY BROWN
Bring It Home
(Viceroy)
Bristish blues pianist Bob Hall put together 'The Savoy Brown Blues Band' back in 1966 featuring the soon to become legendary Kim Simmonds. 'Savoy Brown' like 'John Mayall's Bluesbreakers' has been the vehicle for many great musicians such as Chris Youlden, Stan Webb (Chicken Shack), Paul Raymond, and gave birth to the group Foghat. Guitarist Kim Simmonds is the only original Savoy Brown member. For Kim's 1995 'Viceroy' release Bring It Home he brought on board the dynamic & powerful vocalist Pete McMahon (formerly of The Kingsnakes) whose vocals are very much like Kim Wilson's (The Fabulous Thunderbirds).

Bring It Home opens with 'Mr Brown's Boogie' that shares similarities to the 'Savoy Brown Boogie' (from Savoy Brown's A Step Further album), and the guitar battle from Ry Cooder's Crossroads movie. The early Fabulous Thunderbirds would have found 'Sweet Loving Thing' ideal. 'Too Much Of A Good Thing' has a groovy jazz riff. 'Misery' is quite melancholy. The pacey Howlin' Wolf classic 'Shake For Me' features the Wolf's guitarist Hubert Sumlin trading licks with Kim. Freddie King's 'Pack It Up' gets revived and is so soulful & funky. 'High On Your Love' features another early Savoy Brown member, Lonesome Dave Peverett (founder/singer/guitarist in Foghat). Kim's slide on the slow 'Worried Man' is dynamic; then he climbs up even another powerful notch when he performs John Lee Hooker's 'Little Wheel'. This also features some great harp playing from Pete. My favourite track on Bring It Home is Percy Mayfield's (Ray Charles had several major hits with Percy's compositions) 'You're In For A Big Surprise'; this features some powerful and soulful wah-wah guitar from Kim. 'Real Fine Woman' is reminscient of the great Clifton Chenier. 'That's What Love Will Do' is one of the most melodic & melancholy songs on Bring It Home. 'Baby Please' showcases Kim's jazzier side, in a blues mode.

This is one of the most diverse blues albums you could hope to buy and warms with repeated exposure.
