ANDREAS VOLLENWEIDER
Caverna Magica
(CBS/Sony)
This is the second album from Austrian electric harpest Andreas Vollenweider. Caverna Magica opens with a walk along the shoreline, voices, wind, and entering the cave. Within the cave drops of water can be heard, that soon become percussion. Andreas' harp encore is not too far behind. By the 3rd track you have travelled to Japan and the 'Lunar Pond'. 'Schajah Saretosh' introduces the very Indian/Middle eastern vocals of Corina Curschellas, whose singing is a blend of lullaby-chanting meets wailing. It is 'Belladonna', 'Angoh' and 'Huiziopochtli' that appeal to me the most. The first takes you across the sea of imagination to foreign shores and sunsets. 'Angoh' introduces the ever enticing Calypso-kettle drums. 'Huiziopochtli' is so mystical, and it begins in chant mode (with vocals and sitar), and developes into an interplay between flutes, orchestra, and harp, that lays down a soundscape, that brings to mind waves crashing against barren shores. The final track is a dip in the depths complete with whale cries. This is an album to escape into. Try it while relaxing in your spa pool.
