EDGAR WINTER
EDGAR WINTER
Winter Blues
(Pyramid/Rhino)
Edgar(brother of blues guitar legend Johnny Winter) is no stranger to jazz or blues, but he is best remembered for his major hit 'Frankenstein' from his 1973 album They Only Come Out At Night.

Winter Blues opens with 'Good Ol' Shoe' that starts as a foot stomping, folky gig, and when the band(guests Rick Derringer, John Paris(harmonica)and Leon Russell) kicks in it 'Good Ol' Shoe' really begins to rock. 'Nu'Orlins' is typical of Dr John and guess who's playing and singing on it? Yes the Dr himself. Edgar sounds a whole lot like Daryll Hall on 'Nu'Orlins'. 'Texas' is reminscient of a re-working of 'Honky Tonk(Bill Doggett) with a Texas flavour. 'New Millennium' and 'On The Tip Of My Tongue' feature both Mitch Perry and Rick on guitars, 'On The Tip Of My Tongue' features Johnny Winter on slide guitar, and 'New Millennium' is worthy of mainstream-rock radio play. I can hear echoes Wes Montgomery's 'Bumpin' during Edgar's jazzy-blues song 'White Man Blues', and of course Edgar's sense of humour comes to the fore with lyrics like "when you're whitter than the rest"(Edgar is an albino). It's on songs like that Edgar really excells, it's such a great groove! There is even a re-working of 'They Only Come Out At Night'. 'It's Only Money' is an excellent pop tune and features Eddie Money(where's he been?). 'Show Your Love' takes you right back to that New Orleans rhythm, I'm just not to sold on the dream-theme. 'You Are My Song' is a track that Edgar should have left off this excellent album. This song could have been a great soul number, but it's the lyrics that make me want to chuck. Leave this song to Kenny.G Edgar.

Apart from this one flaw, the album is a real gem!
