Are you nervous about your English crossover CD? I'm very excited. I'm really, really happy.
How did you prepare for it? I have been preparing myself for this album for the last 5 years. I haven't stopped touring the world, but I kept all the directors, producers and songwriters close to me so they could get to know me better. Plus, I had a trainer in English.
So what do you think makes you different from the other Latin artists out there? Fusion is my music. I grew up in different countries and I love to mix those cultures into my music.
What kind of influences? Flamenco guitars, hip-hop, a little bit of rap: I like a fusion between acoustic music and techno. I love to make dance music, and to express my ideas simply. My music goes out to strong girls like me, those girls who know what they want from life.
:
That's very cool. I know you had a successful film and TV career in Mexico. Are you interested in doing that here? Before, I did a little bit of everything. I acted in theater, I did a movie, and three soap operas. But right now I'm focusing on my live concerts and the release of this album.
Tell us about your first band, Timbiriche. I spent, like, 10 years with them. We were touring most of the world.
And you decided to go solo. Was that hard for you? It was hard because I was really missing my friends. When you are on stage with a group, it's different. You all choose the color of everything: The color of your clothes, the color of your music, the image, and the message. But when you're alone, you're just yourself.
Are you planning on touring the U.S. soon? Yeah, in September, I will do a worldwide tour. For now, I'm just promoting the album around the world, but soon we'll be able to start this tour.
What can people expect from your live show? Well, I love to improvise. So, we have idea of what the show will be like, but I love to be able to do whatever. To jump into the audience, to play the guitar or drums, to make the security behind me to go crazy wondering what else am I going to do. I'm hyperactive, so I love to move and to dance and to jump and to be able to change the speed a little bit and improvise as much as I need to.
How do you think this album is different from the other CDs that you've have done? It's different because my moment is different. My inspirations are totally different from my first album. For example, I have released 23 albums already and this is my first album in English. But I was very wary not to change my message, you know, my simple message. Not to translate my lyrics, to redo them again.
What do you think is the most difficult thing for Latin artists trying to cross over into the English market? For me it is not that hard because it is not about language, it is more about being yourself. I did this album in English because I want to reach more people. The name of the album is Border Girl 'cause I grew up within in different borders in Spain, Mexico, and Los Angeles. I live in a world with no borders. At the same time, you have borders between countries, borders in your mind, borders between relations. And the first border that I am crossing is doing an album in English.
Why do you think American audiences are embracing Latin music now? I think they feel our feelings, you know? They like our rhythm and they like our style and the way we love people and the way we express that. We are very open also, and able to be friendly and more focused on simple things.
Well, we think you look fabulous on this CD cover and on your Web site. Give us some of your favorite beauty tips or tricks that you've learned along the way. I practice yoga in a heated room. That way, you sweat a lot and it's good for your system, and your skin. And I drink a lot of water. I do it every day. It gives me balance. I also train in the gym with my personal trainer.
And what about beauty products? Are there any you can't live without? I'd die without Carmex to moisturize my lips. I love Shisiedo, and there are some new products from Prescriptives that are very cool, like the liquid powder.
And any hair products? You did say you like tropical weather, and we all know what that does to your hair. Yeah, all those anti-frizz products. Uh, the Potion 9 by Sebastian is great. I need a lot of moisturizer for my skin, my face, and my hair. But I think the most important secret is to work out, to sweat a lot, and to drink a lot of water.
