Latina Diva: Paulina Rubio [Singapore - 26 July 2002]
Oozing sexy earthiness is reigning queen of Mexican pop, Paulina Rubio in her English debut, Border Girl. She's not just a pretty face with va-va-voom curves. Paulina Rubio is the latest Latina diva crossing over to international superstardom. Her latest single "Don't Say Goodbye" is smouldering the airwaves already.
This pop diva, nicknamed "The Golden Girl", has conquered her native country Mexico and is on the cusp of great success. She has been in the business for almost two decades.
Born on 17 June 1971 in Mexico City, she knew she wanted to be a singer when she was only seven years old. Daughter of famous Mexican actress, Susana Dosamantes, little Paulina was raised in Mexico, Los Angeles and Spain. She was surrounded by her mother's artist friends who were mostly writes, filmmakers, architects and singers. The travelling and exposure to different cultures inspired Paulina to be more independent and decisive. She wanted to become a star.
She attended prestigious performing arts school, El Centro de Capacitacion de Televisa to study singing and dancing. This proved to be a wise move as she was selected to be one of the members of Mexican teen sensation, Timbiriche.
This aspiring singer went solo in the early '90s and her debut album, La Chica Dorada went platinum, spawning hit singles, "Nieva, Nieva" and "Asunto De Doas". There was no looking back, as she dedicated herself to her music and forayed into acting. While she churned out albums, she acted in popular soaps like Pasion y poder and Pobre Niņa Rica. This determined singer-actress made her big screen debut in 1994's Besame an la boca.
Often compared to Latina crossover Shakira, Rubio is actually good friends with her and doesn't see her as competition at all. Rubio is more than ready to make waves with English-speaking audiences all over the world. She has been featured on 24 albums and has released 5 solo records in Spanish. Border Girl is her first English LP.
Her first English single "Don't Say Goodbye" is meant for some serious gyrating with its hypnotic Euro-pop beats and its sexy come-hither attitude. Rubio experiments with some melodic rock on the title track, while "Casanova" is rump-shaking rumba in the tradition of Ricky Martin shake-your-bon-bon.
There're more hi-energy disco tracks like the cheeky "I'll Be Right Here (Sexual Lover)" and "Fire (Sexy Dance)". Rubio's not afraid to be brassy and her sex appeal is effortless, reinforced by her irresistibly sensual Latina accent. "Stereo" sees this Spanish pop princess try her hand at singing to jiving R&B beats, accompanied by some cool hard hitting rap.
But this dancing queen has a sensitive side that peeks out in breathy acoustic ballad "Undeniable". "The Last Goodbye" is laden with lazy ranchera rhythms and a subtle R&B groove.
Not forgetting her roots, this Mexican firecracker closes her album with Spanish versions of "Don't Say Goodbye" ("Si Tu Te Vas") and "Casanova" ("Baila Casanova"). There are two new Spanish tracks, "Libre" and "Todo Mi Amor".
It's a gorgeous pop album that fuses pop, dance, hip hop, R&B, rock with Latino influences. Poised to plunge into pop divadom, this Mexican beauty has what it takes to be an international superstar. (LYM)
