Paulina Rubio: I think it was harder to sing in French and Italian. How many languages do you speak? Paulina: Four. Italian, French, Spanish, and English. You speak English very well. Paulina: I went to a bilingual school. So I started speaking English very early. I went to an American school in Mexico and just went from there. Weren't you a big child star in Mexico? Paulina: I started singing when I was six years old, and had the opportunity to write my own music and sing it all over the world. It was lovely to grow up like that. So you've been singing your entire life. Paulina: Yeah. It's been lovely! I can't imagine doing anything else but singing my music. I need it to express myself and it's my connection to the world. Was it difficult being accepted as an adult singing star after such early fame as a child star? Paulina: What do you mean? (Laughs) Was it difficult being taken seriously as an adult singer? Paulina: I think that I had the opportunity to grow up with a whole generation. My fans grew up with me. They shared the moments with me when I was 10, 15, and 20. My lyrics have changed as I have grown and the people who enjoy my music accept that. We've all grown up together. It was nature. Is there a difference between being an American singing star and being a Mexican singing star? Paulina: I think right now the world isn't about nationality. It's more in your message and your personality and your music. But doesn't it mean something special to make it in America as opposed to anywhere else in the world? Paulina: Success for me is different. Every single human being defines success in different ways. For me to contact other parts of the world is important. My music is global. My mind is global and my culture is global. Your last album "Paulina" sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S. Did that surprise you since it wasn't in English? Paulina: I was surprised and very excited! Was that what motivated you to come out with an English-speaking album? Paulina: I wanted to do that even before "Paulina" came out. I wanted to prove to my [record] label and to prove to myself that I could do it. But what about your fans in Mexico? Are you concerned they will feel betrayed by an English-speaking album? Paulina: You know, my fans in Mexico are very jealous. Jealous of what? Paulina: Of me. They are very possessive of me. They know me very, very well, but they also knew that my next step was to record in different languages. What is your biggest appeal? Paulina: I think my mind and my sense of humor. I have a great sense of humor. I prefer to laugh than the other thing! (Laughs) What is your vice? Paulina: I love food! I could sit down and eat everything! How do you stay so thin? Paulina: Because I'm very hyperactive! My brain is always mixing colors! Plus I do yoga and I work out very hard. Not only do you have a sense of humor but you're also very beautiful. Are men intimidated by your beauty? Paulina: No matter what your nationality, men are afraid of strong women. When you're clear about what you want and how you want to do it, men are intimidated. Do you consider men horny dogs? Paulina: (Laughs) Some of them! Is it a man's world, especially in the music industry? Paulina: I believe women are the power of the new millennium. Instead of fighting, we know how to share our ideas. But in many civilizations, when the girls get the power, they kill us. The New York Times criticized you for selling your sexuality, at the same time claiming to be a feminist. How do you respond? Paulina: I'm a contemporary woman. It doesn't matter if you have sex appeal or if you eat meat or vegetables or share the feminist life with others. I come from a family where the women are very strong. I read what you're talking about and I don't care what they say. I am the way I am and that's it. I get the feeling you really enjoy your sexual side. Paulina: I like being myself. You can see that I have sex appeal, but at the same time I eat a lot and I love to laugh. All pop stars today are beautiful people who sell their looks even more so than the music, it would seem. Are looks more important than the actual music? Paulina: Not all the time. If you're beautiful or you look attractive, people think that you're stupid, but that's not the case. Look at Shakira, she's very talented and a great musician who writes her own music. But people just talk about her looks. What's wrong with being good looking? Can you make it in music and not be attractive? Paulina: When you have the opportunity of releasing an album and hearing it on the radio, the most important thing is not showing your face. You can be good looking, but you better be able to perform live and play your instruments. Concerts are everything! They're more important than some video. I started singing when I was eight and I was ugly and thin. My legs were like two straws. I'm grown up now and I'm not afraid of critics, and I'm not ashamed to be attractive. Is it true you'll be on the cover of Maxim magazine next month? Paulina: Yes. It's very exciting. I've also been on the cover of the Spanish Rolling Stone magazine twice! Any talk of making the cover of the English Rolling Stone? Paulina: We're working on that! The world seems to be at your feet. Paulina: It's all very exciting and I love doing all this promotion, but when someone says tell me about your music, I would much rather show them than talk about it. I read that you have been known to lip-sync during your concerts. Is that true? Paulina: I think it's common all around the world. Especially when you have a TV show. Although David Letterman and Jay Leno require that you sing live. But most TV shows, they often don't give you the option. What about in live concerts? Paulina: I try never to lip-sync in concerts. At least I try not to do it. I have a very large crew, maybe 30 or 40 people, and I'm very expensive so sometimes they don't allow me to sing live. But I hate that. Do you think Britney Spears lip-syncs? Paulina: I don't know and I don't care what she does. What do you think of her? Paulina: I think she's beautiful and she has a great mother, like mine. How have you managed to not become burned out after performing your entire life? Paulina: I think when you enjoy doing what you love, that rejuvenates your own energy. I just love to be on stage! You just turned 31. Was turning 30 traumatic for you? Paulina: Not at all. I love my age. I'm younger than Jennifer Lopez and I'm younger than Kylie Minogue. I'm younger than many successful girls. I'm still young enough and I have all these years behind me supporting my career. One time during a concert you lifted up your dress and showed your panties to the audience. A journalist wrote that doing such a thing was a cheap way of winning over the audience. That remark made you very upset. Paulina: I have freedom of expression and I do whatever I want to do. I don't take seriously any comment from anyone. Any plans to pursue acting? Paulina: I just said no to a movie offer from Universal Studios. Why? Paulina: I don't want to act. I need to focus on what I love and I don't like acting. I just don't have it in my blood. I prefer to be on the road with my band and having concerts every night. I could totally see you starring in a movie. Paulina: I just don't feel it right now. Maybe I'll change my mind in a couple of years. But not right now. I need to be very focused with my band. I see you as the lead in "Austin Powers 4." Paulina: Really! (Laughs) I can see myself as Madonna, maybe recording the song for Austin Powers but not acting in it. What do you think of Jennifer Lopez? Paulina: I think she's cool. Have you met her? Paulina: Yeah. Has anyone compared you to her? Paulina: No. I'm Mexican and she's from America. I mean, she's a great girl, but she's nothing like me. Selena was a tremendous idol to millions of Mexican people. Were you a fan of her music? Paulina: No. She was my friend. We were signed to the same record label at Capitol Records for a couple of years and she was lovely, but I didn't like her type of music. She's not really Mexican. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. I know her brother and the rest of her family. But I just didn't like her music. How wild are you? Paulina: I'm different! I'm not a typical girl. I grew up with many cultures and I speak many languages. My parents were very worried about what I would do after school, so I studied many different things. I'm very active and I have health and love. Those are the two most important things. Are you in love now? Paulina: I'm always in love! What is your biggest fault? Paulina: I love food and I love to buy art. Don't take this the wrong way, but being Mexican, is it fair to say you're somewhat an expert on tequila? Paulina: I love tequila! What's your opinion of Sammy Hagar's tequila, Cabo Wabo? Paulina: I will tell you that Cabo Wabo doesn't exist for me. I've never heard about it. How much does he charge per bottle? Interviewer:Around 80 dollars. Paulina: If he's charging 80 dollars a bottle, I will tell you that it's not good tequila. You need to spend more than a thousand dollars a bottle to get the really good tequila. There's no hangover with the expensive tequila. Is it true you don't believe in marriage? Paulina: It's not true. I don't want to be married right now because once I start, I'm going to be like Liz Taylor! I'll have 20 weddings with different guys! Who is your favorite celebrity friend? Paulina: Ricky Martin. We grew up together. He was in Menudo and I was in a girl group that competed against them. I love Ricky! We're family. I'm also close to Mark Anthony. I have to ask, has Playboy contacted you? Paulina: Yeah! (Laughs) But we don't need them! When was the last time you got really mad? Paulina: Yesterday! I was very tired and I traveled from New York to Boston to do all these interviews. But when I got back to New York, there was no car to pick me up and I got so angry! I fought with my assistant. He's like my nanny. He's been with me for 20 years. I just went Ugh! Do you have a bad temper? Paulina: I do! I'm worse than someone who has Mexican blood. I have Aztec blood. Do you know that Aztecs kill their victims and then they eat their hearts? That's true! I'll keep that in mind. What do you like to eat? Paulina: I love to eat crickets! Are you joking? Paulina: I'm serious! I love eating crickets! If you go to France, you eat ants with chocolate. I love crickets with lemon in a tortilla! Are they dead? Paulina: Of course they are dead! This is not China. We're not killing the monkeys in front of you! Crickets are very good! I also eat ant eggs! In Mexico it's 500 dollars an order, but they're delicious! How big are the ant eggs? Paulina: Believe it or not, it's better than a little animal because you just don't get the egg, you get all the larvae that protect it. I'm going to be sick. Paulina: It's delicious! I also eat caterpillars. I love them! If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? Paulina: Mecinos. It's summer and all the best DJs in the world are down there. Plus I love to sail and I love Greek food! So what better place to be? |
