Interview with Mark Barry

Mark Barry is one third of Britian's hottest export since the Beatles. BBMak are a talented trio with hits like 'Back Here' and 'Still On Your Side'. The lads will be touring with NSYNC from May 23rd to June 17th after which they fly to Orlando, FL for Radio Disney's Strudelpalooza. They're currently on a media blitz promoting their new ballad, a cover of 'Ghost Of You And Me'. And eFG was lucky enough to get Mark on the phone for a chat.

eFG : Share a bit about yourself for the efanguide public please
Mark: I'm Mark from BBMak, and I'm one of the singers and also one on the songwriting team. 22 Years old from Manchester, England. I'm a scorpio. I've got one brother, one sister, both older than me and I'm a big big fan of music.

eFG : What made you decide to cover "Ghost Of You And Me"?
Mark: Well actually, we was in the studio in Los Angeles. Was actually recording one of the tracks, 'Unpredictable' and we'd actually gone on a break. And I went to a guys house called John Linde. He had a demo in his house and he played it to me and I thought it was great, fell in love with it straight away. So I took it to the studio and let the other guys listen to it and it was like an instant sort of reaction. "Gotta do that song!" It was a perfect BBMak song.

eFG : Any particular reason you decided to release it as a single?
Mark:It's just a big ballad. When we recorded it we were so pleased at how it turned out to be. We had a full orchestra on the track,. It sounds big, its a big epic ballad. It's one of those songs you know when you hear it you fall in love with it. So from our reaction as well we were very confident it would be hit.

eFG : I know you added 3 new tracks to the UK edit of Sooner Or Later, and there are also different tracks on the Asian edit as well. Is there any reason the US, UK and Asian albums are all different?
Mark: Well what it was, when we first released the album it was in Asia and at that point we was kind of happy with the album. I think as time went along we were just writing better songs. There were a couple of songs that came along, like "Ghost Of You And Me" and "Unpredictable" and we thought you know these are such great songs and we had written a couple of great songs ourselves. So we said why not just take off some of the tracks we were unhappy with on the Asian album and add these tracks to the American album to make it stronger. And we did that and we believe the American album has great 12 tracks. And again we just wrote some more songs. We knew we wanted more tracks on the UK album. But the Americans aren't going to lose out on the extra tracks we put on the UK album because hopefully we're going to put those on the next album.

eFG : How does it feel to finally have "broken" home? Is Fame in the UK different from fame in the US?
Mark: It's all the same. I think its a bit different for me and for the lads because you know its home. England is our home and that's where our friends and family are.. And for them to see all the success grow as well. They couldn't see all this when we were in America, they missed out on all of it, it just feels nice. It's more of a pride thing, you know getting the success in the UK. And everything's going fantastic.

eFG : And of course with fame in the UK comes fame in the tabloids. Any horrible stories printed that just aren't true? Because I actually read one this morning...
Mark: There's actually one.. Well which one did you read?
eFG : I read you got kicked out of Disney....
Mark: I know yah, well it wasn't just me! ::laughs:: I'll tell you the story, we were doing a gig and it wasn't actually last week, this was like last year. Summer of last year, we was in Disneyland doing a couple of gigs. And it was really a hot day so we just took in about 6 drinks between ourselves and the band. Cuz it was a hot day and everything so we did that. It just got taken completely the wrong way. We was just in our dressing room, had a beer each and we got kicked out. We didn't mean to do that, you know what I mean?

eFG : I saw on the MSN chat last night that you all spend time on the internet, do you visit your official message board at BBMak.co.uk a lot?
Mark: Eh not lately because we've been on the bus a lot and its hard to get online. But Christian uses it a lot more than me or Stephen does.

eFG : Why do you think you have such a devoted Internet fan base?
Mark: I think its just because you know all these fans you know they all become friends on the internet. And they think, they got their whole BBMak Army, with their websites and it all just snowballs. It can only get bigger. The more people who hear about us, a lot more people to help out to spread the word of BBMak. I think its just the whole thing of all these fans talking to each other on the web. Just getting together and doing something about it really.

eFG : This next question actually came from a fan on that message board. Why is your name BBMak with an AK? Why not BBMc with a C and no A since Stes name is McNally with a C?
Mark: Because visually it looks better.

eFG : What are you doing after you finish your leg of the NSYNC tour?
Mark: Well we're going to be going back to the UK, hopefully. We've got two weeks off after the NSYNC tour. We're gonna go on a holiday, chill out for two weeks then go back to the UK and promote "Ghost Of You And Me".

eFG : What has been your most embarrasing moment on stage?
Mark: I think, a lot of times when you're on stage, you get rocky, you get a rocky stage and the mics move backwards and forwards and many times the microphone has hit me in the face when I've been dancing. Not dancing, dancing but moving and singing to the mic. Turned around and the microphone has hit me in the face and a lot of people have seen it. But I think the most embarrassing thing was last year we did a show at a baseball ground in America and halfway into the set I got hit between the legs...it wasn't like sudden pain, like 5 seconds later it really hurt and I was in pain on stage and everyone seen it. A lot of people were laughing. And then later all of a sudden this big baseball flew past. I think it was some jealous lad.

eFG : If you weren't in the music business, and on stage everyday what do you think you would you be doing now?
Mark: Well before the band I was actually training to be a fireman. So I think I'd be putting fires out now. Because I was always so athletic in school and college. I always liked the physical part of things so probably the fire service now.

eFG : If you were in the audience and you wanted to get the singers attention, what would you do??
Mark: Probably throw something.. ::laughs:: aim between the legs ::laughs::

eFG : I heard you all have a few girls who follow you in England who actually flash you...to get your attention.
Mark: There was actually one incident when we did a gig in Liverpool. One of our own BBMak gigs, fantastic gig. It was very hard to get out of the place because it was barricaded with fans. And we got in the van and driving off and 3 or 4 girls flashed us, in front of the van, it was quite amusing actually.
eFG : Does stuff like that shock you?
Mark: It can be at times because a lot of young fans that surprise me actually with the way they are. I know if I was that age I don't think I could ever be like that. We have some cheeky fans...

eFG : You are all very stylish, do you have a stylist or do you pick them out?
Mark: We do have a stylist but the good thing is we don't get told what to wear. You know we've got the clothes you see on tv and go on stage. We're comfortable wearing them. It's not like "Oh you gotta wear that you gotta wear that." We just wear whatever we're comfortable wearing. Jeans, t-shirts any jacket. You know easy on the eyes. Simple, yet effective.
