About 20 minutes after completing my interview with Larry Kirwan, Black 47's spokesman, lead singer, electric guitarist and primary composer, at Finnigan's Wake in Philadelphia on March 1, 2001, I saw Black 47 in concert for the first time. It was a great night of live rock and roll. After listening to their latest CD, Trouble In the Land, which won my "CD of the Year" honors for 2000, I was hooked. But as great as that CD is, I quickly discovered that Black 47 was born to play live. They play a loud mix of reggae, Celtic folk music, & punk rock punctuated by Irish revolutionary politics. If you can visualize Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Chieftans, and The Clash all playing together on stage in the same band, you get the idea. Read my review of Trouble In the Land for a further glimpse at B47's sound. You should also listen to and buy 1999's Live In New York City and On Fire both superb representations of their live show.
