Sandy Weiman

June 11, 1931 - May 20, 2003

Sandy Weiman, 71, of Highland Park, and formerly of Northbrook, died May 20, in Highland Park Hospital.

Mrs. Weiman was born June 11, 1931. She was raised on Chicago's South Side, where she began her lifelong commitment to community service. She was a member of the Beth Am Sisterhood and a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader. She worked as a volunteer in a variety of organizations, including her children's schools as well as at inner-city schools and hospitals such as Delano School, La Rabida Children's Hospital, and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. For many years, she collected and delivered food to low-income Chicago neighborhoods for Operation Breadbasket (Rainbow/PUSH).

She was a former member of Northbrook District 27 School Board; a former president of the PTA; a member of the Northbrook Plan Commission, the League of Woman's Voters, and the NAACP. She established the Welfare Fund in District 27.

For years, she made daily lunches for neighborhood children from low income families. She was a child advocate, who helped see that teachers were trained to recognize and report child abuse and neglect, and who helped secure supportive services for children with special needs. She was also the proud sponsor of a number of indigent foster children in foreign countries.

Mrs. Weiman's ceaseless humanity, including her devotion to civic duty, was a model for many -- most of all her children. It cultivated the commitment of her eldest daughter, Gail Beebe, to the care and shelter of sick and homeless animals; it fostered the Pro Bono work of her son, Michael Weiman, an attorney; and it inspired her daughter, Heidi Weiman, an assistant professor in early childhood education at Evanston's Kendall College, to dedicate her own life to remedying the human condition and serving the public good.

Survivors include her husband, Ed, of Highland Park; one son, Michael (Lori); two daughters, Heidi of Chicago and Gail Beebe of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Mackenzie, Chase, Dana and Robin; and two great-grandchildren, Alyza and Autumn.

Mrs. Weiman was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Gerald Cordell Jr. of Australia.

A funeral service was held last Friday, May 23, at The Piser Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park, Skokie.

Memorial contributions, in her memory, may be made to American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago, 1440 Washington Blvd., Chicago IL 60607.

I love you, Mom, with all my heart, and I miss you every day of my life. Here is Charlie Chaplin's song, "Smile", which reminds me of you, because you taught it to me, during my early childhood, and also because of your optimistic nature. The wonderful, diverse music that you filled our home with, Classical, Show Tunes, Frank Sinatra, Nat Kig Cole, Johnny Mathis, Harry, Ella, Sarah, Lena... brought us so many blissful moments. Your joie de vivre and ageless playfulness continue to be the source of my most heart-warming memories. I've always felt so blessed to have you as my mother. May your abundant love and gracious spirit forever reside in my own smile.
Happy Mother's Day! Love Always, Heidi, May 11, 2008
