Biffy Clyro
11 August 2002

We were lucky enough to catch up with the lovely boys of Biffy Clyro after their storming set at The Park. We had loads of great ideas for questions to try to tax them to the full, but unfortunately the everso lovely woman on the door told us that we could only spend a few minutes with the band because we were going to be chucked out – charming! As a result we had to make do with just a quickie, but it was still better than nothing.

You’ve got a song called 'Scary Mary'. Name a Mary you find scary
The Mary that it was written about is pretty scary. We don't really know of any other Mary's.

So it’s a song written about someone you know, from personal experience?
No, actually it’s a song about Mary Queen of Scots.

(Yeah right, we weren't born yesterday - honestly!!) So it’s historical then!?
Yes. It’s a period piece!!

When bands are on tour, they are renowned for being a bit smelly, so how whiffy are Biffy?
How whiffy are Biffy!? Ha ha ha ha ha. Do you want to smell us!? Actually we don’t really smell too bad. Not as bad as you would expect anyway.

But on a scale of one to ten, how smelly would you say you are?
Oh, I don’t know, maybe about five.

Is it true that at school you were friends with Martin from Aerogramme, and he had a Cliff Richard pen which he named the Cliffy Biro, and that’s where you got the name Biffy Clyro from?.
Yeah, that's true in a way, but he never actually owned a Cliff Richard pen, I think it was just what he would call it if he did ever have one.

NME has described you as a less interesting Bush. Do you think that that is a fair comment?
No, that is complete rubbish. We don’t sound anything like Bush!

What made you play in Peterborough?
Our tour manager!! Also, we’ve played here before and really enjoyed it, so just decided to come back.

What's the worst gig that you have played?
Glasgow was pretty bad. We played at some Country and Western night. Not really sure how we went down!

How was T- in The Park?
Oh, it was amazing.

Are you looking forward to Reading and Leeds?
Yes deffinately. We’re mates with a lot of the bands who are playing this year which is great. Plus we also like the fact that we get to play to people who wouldn’t usually go to our gigs and who wouldn't necessarily be fans.

Which band are you friends with then, just out of interest?
We're good friends with Hundred Reasons!

Hundred Reasons eh? (aaarrrgh...is there no getting away from this band!) Colin and Larry lied to us about their names! – Infact, thinking about it quite a lot of bands seem to do this! Now that’s not very nice is it?
Really? Nah, they’re really nice guys. I'm sure they were only joking with you. Anyway I bet you don’t know our names!

Urmmmmm...er... yeah of course we do...anyway, moving swiftly on...You say "death to false metal". What exactly is false metal?
Basically all this nu-metal stuff thats about at the moment. Guys in nu-metal bands who think they are the meanest guys around, but in all honesty are just pop bands playing metal. Yeah, boy bands playing metal. Just false metal!

Where do you see yourselves in Five years and where would you like to be?
We just hope to still be around, touring, making great songs and doing what we love.

Men lie. Rockstars lie more, but what else could we expect from people who are friends with Hundred Reasons for God’s sake. There really is no accounting for taste these days!
