Greatest Hits?

'...... Greatest hits'. Why oh why are they called that? These compilation CD's dont contain a bands greatest hits at all. They contain all a bands singles, regardless of whether they were actually hits or not. Its the same with 'The Best Of....' albums. Take Blur for instance, they released 'The Best Of Blur', a CD of all their best songs, or supposedly anyway. It was infact a CD of all their singles and some of them weren’t even all that great and couldnt be classed as their 'best ' work. If they wanted a CD that really was the best of blur, then maybe a few B-Sides and album tracks should have gone onto it. The latest example of this is GreenDay and their recent release 'International Superhits'. Were they all Superhits? Were they my arse! Seeing as only a small percentage of the population had actually heard of GreenDay pre Dookie, it’s a pretty safe bet that the majority of songs on this album weren’t even hits, let alone superhits. But at least the world hasn’t gone completely mad. Depechmode actually had the since to call their album what it was, 'Depechmode, The Singles'.

Even worse than the bands, are the pop groups. They actually have the stupidity to put an album out of all their so-called greatest hits that again contains all their singles, as well as also a few songs that are due for release in the not too distant future. How do they know if they are going to be hits? They could be complete flops; then they'd be looking a bit stupid! How can you have a CD of greatest hits when some of them haven’t even been released yet, yet alone been hits yet? Dur!!

Another thing about Greatest Hit CD's is that however much a band try to deny that its release isn’t the end of the band, just the end of the chapter, we all know that its complete crap and that first thing Monday morning they'll be heading straight for the dole queue. It happened with Take That, East17, Steps and I dont know about anyone else but I certainly haven’t seen much action from the Oasis boys since the 'Masterplan' box set of singles came out, as for Blur, well i've completely forgotten what the look like. I just hope that GreenDay dont now go down the same path.
