Hell Is for Heroes
11 December 2002

You're coming to the end of your present tour, so how swell are Hell is for Heroes, and what has been the highlight of your tour?
How swell?? Very swell. The tours has been wicked. We’ve been playing a lot of places we’ve never been to before - like Peterborough. It’s been cool, we’ve been meeting new people and hopefully along the way some folks who have never seen us before have come down and enjoyed the show.

You have a song called ‘you drove me to it’, what drives you mad?
Our tour manager. Not really. Erm...Nothing really, I’m quite chilled out.

You also have a song called ‘Kill the Silence’, is this what you hope to achieve with your music
Not exclusively, but noise is better than silence.

Your music has been described as UK nu-metal. Do you think nu-metal is the accurate description, or can you think of a better name for it? .

We’re not nu-metal. I don’t want to be associated with nu-metal.

Somone else described you as nu-rock. Do you think that’s a better name?

I don't know. Just rock. The only time you ever need to categorise your music is in interviews!!
(Cue a big argument over whether you should just be able to make music you like without having to catagorise it!)

What distinguishes you from the plethora of other bands out there?

Every band is different to each other surely. No two bands are the same.

So what makes you stand out from other bands then?
The people who listen to our music can only answer that. It’s up to other people to decide what makes us stand out.

NME appears to have mixed feelings about your releases. The liked the song ‘Sick-Happy’, but described ‘You drove me to it’ as "a well-greased skateboard with one wheel missing". They also took a dislike to your most recent single ‘Night vision’. What are your reactions to NME’s evaluations of your music?
They slated our single and on the same page quoted themselves as bigging us up, so who gives a shit about NME. It does really mean anything.

How do you feel about Rock Sound saying that you’re going to be huge? Do you feel it puts more pressure on you to succeed?
Not really. I think it’s really nice.

How frustrating was it when ‘I Can Climb Mountains’ narrowly missed out on a chart position by entering at number 41? .
I was relieved. We’re in the charts now so it doesn’t matter anymore but I just didn’t want to be on Top Of The Pops!

Would you rather perform on Top Of The Pops for £50,000 or headline a major festival for free?
No doubt about it, headline a festival. However much money we were to get for TOTP, a festival would always win.

If hell is for heroes, what is heaven for?
Girls! That was a really stupid thing to say wasn’t it?! I don't know. It's just somewhere for Elvis to gig!!

How do you feel about ‘Unchained Melody’ by Gareth Gates’ winning the title of the greatest single of the year?
I feel totally apathetic about it. I don’t really care about anything in the pop world.

Nothing at all? Are there not even any pop songs you like?
No. But I like Blue, they’re cool. And 5ive. Any pop band sucks. I think the desperation of the people on these Popstar programmes for attention is ridiculous. You know that they’re going to flop straight away anyway.

What song of this year do you think should have won the title?
The Cheeky Girls. I think it’s a wicked song, it’s the worst song ever written but it’s brilliant. It’s amazing how the worst song in the world can be so popular.

Do you fear death? If not, what would you describe as your greatest fear?
I don’t fear death. Hmmm...I can’t think of one.

Are you not scared of ever being beaten to number 1 by SClub Juniors?
I would be gutted, but its not a great fear.

Somebody on your website message board wanted to know if you had girlfriends. So are you single?
I have a girlfriend, but not everyone in the band does.
