Brendon from Wheatus
26th March 2003

Just a couple of things, which are actually kinda irrelevant, but I’m the one writing this so ha . Firstly, I seem to have developed this annoying habit whereby I cough inbetween asking questions – usually just before I ask the question - for no apparent reason! Almost like some freaky reverse of the Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire Fraud Scam, I’m not sure why, (answers on a postcard please), I never used to. Secondly, although perhaps more importantly, Wheatus have the scariest tour manager ever. You have been warned!

I don’t think that your tour Manager likes us. He said we were harassing him. We asked him ONCE if we could interview you, then he told someone how we had been harassing him for ages!.
SO?! (charming!) It’s his job to be like that – he just does it very well. He doesn’t even know you

Do you like Wheat?
...(long pause...)...VERY AWKWARD LONG PAUSE...shit, he thinks we’re nutters. Interesting question (laughing in background. By interesting we thinks he meant stupid). I have to admit! Because I don’t know when I’m eating wheat except for when I’m eating whole wheat bread! The only question I can answer is do I like whole wheat bread and the answer is yes! That’s absolutely nothing to do with music but yeah.

(Jesus!)

You new album is called ‘Hand Over Your Loved Ones’, which loved ones would you consider handing over?
Erm... I wouldn’t actually. My grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease and when we were making the album we lived with her and we all had to kinda take care her while making the album in my apartment.

Where’s your apartment?
Long Island – where I grew up.

Wheat is a common allergy, but do Wheatus have any allergies?
I’m allergic to penicillin. My brother is allergic to amoxicillin (or something that sounds like that on the dictaphone. Another antibiotic apparently).

Are you considering releasing a song about your feeling about the war with Iraq?
No. I did write a song about the World Trade Centre though, it's called Hometown, but I didn’t really want to put it on this record, but we will be releasing it at a later date.

What would you say is your opinion on the war?
I don’t give my opinion on the war, because most people are far less informed than they think they are.

Why have you decided to play at smaller venues?
Because the record isn’t out yet, and we want to get the set and live show really up to date...really good before we go into bigger venues and the energy is way different at a show with no security guards or barrier. A good show at a small club is better than a good show at a large club. The sound in small venues is always limiting, but the sound guy did a really good job so I think it all went okay.

Okay, a few questions with really long answers followed in which Brandon basically trashed rock journalists for being failed musicians and said that basically they saw themselves as being more artistic that the musicians themselves. Cheeky. He also remarked that the press were quick to trash a band when they are not as succesful after having an international hit like ‘Teenage Dirtbag’. We told him that ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ was knocked off the no.1 spot by Atomic Kittens ‘Whole Again’, which he admitted he liked! At least I think that’s what he said because by now we couldn’t hear him because somebody decided to take it upon themselves to do a little rendition of the song in question! Although what we did catch was Brandon’s remark that a lot of manufactured bands aren’t really music but musical theatre.

Just like acting, yeah?
Yep, like Broadway.

If you could be invisable for a day what would you do and why?
Oh man...I would sit inside the war room in the Pentagon and try and find out what they know

Last question. Hot days. Like or hate?
Yes Love them.

Despite his initial brashness and mocking of anyone who writes about music Brandon was a nice guy. He also spoke quite freely (apparently some other local press had problems! – but won’t say who) so at least we should be grateful for that.
