AUSTIN TABLA WORKSHOP INFORMATION

AND HOW TO GET STARTED LEARNING TABLA

 

 

 

• Each Tabla Workshop Session is a one month session (4 classes over 4 weeks) and takes place every Saturday morning at the Austin Asian Cultural Center 
• Monthly Workshop session Fee is $60.00 total for the 4 classes, due at registration the first Saturday of each month  (note: there is no refund for students missing classes)
• Workshop class starts on Saturday at 10:00am for new beginners. The beginning session last 45 minutes. Intermediate beginners should arrive at 10:30am, advanced at 11:30. (Students can attend for the entire duration of all class levels. At intervals each level of students will move forward as progresses in difficulty)
• Students must have a set of tabla in order to take the classes although a temporary rental set may be available if needed. Rental fee is $25.00 per week plus a $150.00 refundable deposit.
• Interested students are welcome anytime to come and watch the class and meet with the instructor(s) at no charge.
• It is not necessary to contact the instructors before coming, but it is recommended either by e-mail or phone ashford2@hotmail.com , 512-249-2943 
• Please bring tabla, a note pad and pencil , recording devices are also recommended.
• If you would like to purchase a set of Tabla there is a local dealer in San Antonio and can be found on the internet at http://www.sitarsetc.com  Although there are several vendors on the net, and best prices can be obtained by buying directly in India our advice on buying Tabla is that it is best to try out a pair before buying 

Class instructor

Warren Ashford: A 20 year student of tabla, Started his training in the 70's at the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in San Rafael California under the late Pandit Jnan Prakesh Ghosh and Ustad Zakir Hussain. He later continued his training in San Francisco under the late Ustad Allah Rakha. Warren has been teaching Tabla for several years and continues to study with Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and many other noted artists

Our goal is to provide the community with a source for learning the tabla and it’s role in North Indian Hindustani classical music.

Teaching this rich heritage, we are dedicated to giving back service to the music, our gurus, and the local community.

We would like to invite interested musicians, beginning and advanced students to come anytime and participate in learning the music and tradition of tabla, we hope it can improve your music skills and enrich your lives as it has ours.

Austin Tabla Workshops are part of Austin's Sangeet Millinium
federal non-profit (501c3) organization dedicated to providing a forum
performers of traditional Indian music and dance to interact with the Austin
music community by giving recitals and offering workshops
in which local music lovers and musicians can participate.
