These pictures were taken
after the elections a few years ago. Wahid got to be president, and the
Balinese favorite Megawati was only wise president. That night, in
the old capital Singaraja, suddenly, in the middle of the night, several
(empty) government buildings caught fire at the same time at different
locations. The message was clear: Jakarta, we don't like it, and when you
come here you have nowhere to go.
But they got a little carried away, they also burned down the roofs
in the bus station, and it really didn't affect anyone but the locals,
who had to stand in the rain when the wet season came.
Nyepi ! Balinese new year. It's special . This is the
celebration. These monsters dolls(Ogoh Ogoh)pictures the wanderings spirits that threatens
to hurt the people in Bali. The story goes like this: Evil spirits
wander around the earth in the skies looking for people they can obsess.
So, on Nyepi, they pass over Bali. Then the balinese go into hiding.
There shall be no light and no sound for the next 24 hours. After the
celebration, at midnight, it all starts.
The locals stay with their families and have good time at home, the
tourists have to stay within the hotel areas and are not allowed outside.
If you think this is ancient history, you are in for a big surprise !
No taxi's, all stores closed, all streets deserted. We met some people
at Nyepi that could not get home, they stayed with us two days. So better
fill up the fridge !
