Why: Simplified Song Interpretations: Philosophy (lyrics)
Somewhere along the line, some people must have gotten the idea that Philosophy is about Ben's penis.
"Philosophy" — a song about the male phallic —still starts tranquilly and roars with a piano-pounding crescendo to, of all things, a pummel-till-your-knuckles-turn-white nod to George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."And
– Daily TrojanThis belief is further helped along by the alternate lyrics ("and I trust it like my strap") on Naked Baby Photos, and Ben's comment in the liner notes, "This song is about my penis -- if that's what you think it's about." In an interview, Ben responded to the question, "Is Philosophy really about your penis?" with "No, it's about my johnson."
To take these comments seriously, however, is to misunderstand Ben's sense of humor. Listen more closely, and you will find a much deeper meaning in Philosophy's lyrics.
