Why: Simplified Song Interpretations: Zak and Sara

Did you know that Zak and Sara are hoping to make it big in the rock world? Well, Zak is playing the guitar...

These are typical dreams of youngsters hoping to make it big in the rock world.

That one is not really so bad, but if Sara's dreams are typical my own must be far below average.  Still, "hoping to make it big in the rock world" is better than:

"Zak and Sara" tells of a young couple facing adulthood and the woes of actual responsibility.        
The Greyhound

Well, there was one mention of layaway in the song; I imagine Sara's bizarre speech to the "friendly salesman" qualifies as expressing the woes of responsibility.  Who knows.

Finally, I don't have any idea what gives the impression that Zak and Sara are breaking up:

They include "Zak and Sarah," the tale of an '80s couple breaking up, in which she has a vision of techno and Ecstasy...
