Chance Encounter

Chapter 18

The months past by, and Brian and Samantha grew closer. They were so very in love, it was almost ridiculous. When the time came for Brian to embark on the Backstreet Boys World Tour, Sam wasn't sure she would survive. She was going to miss him so much.

"But you can come visit me anytime you want to," Brian pleaded. "Please don't cry."

"I'm not crying," Samantha sniffed. "I'm just... sniffling."

"You can bring Adam. We'll have a great time. When we're in California, we can take him to Disney Land or something. I think I've got a day or two off while I'm there." His blue eyes were shining with emotion.

Samantha nodded, but she knew it would be very difficult to balance her schedule, Adam's school, and Brian's tour schedule. There just wouldn't be much time at all. And ten months was such a long time to be apart...

Brian left the next day for Boston, leaving Samantha and Adam standing at the gate, watching the plane disappear into the clear blue sky.

"Mommy, when is Brian coming home?" Adam asked, his huge blue eyes staring up at her.

"It's going to be awhile, baby," Samantha replied, feeling her voice catch in her throat.

"Is he ever coming back?"

"Of course he is," Samantha said, trying to smile. "And maybe we can go visit him, too."

"Ok," Adam said solemnly.

They made their way through the throng of fans who had come to see the Boys off. The people were all pushing and screaming, and Adam was getting very scared. Samantha picked him up and pushed her way through the crowd. Girls were pulling at her hair, her clothes, trying to get anything they could that had anything to do with Brian. By the time Sam made it to her car, she and Adam were both exhausted.

"Mommy, that was scary," Adam said quietly.

"I know, baby. That was scary, wasn't it," Samantha said, pulling down her mirror and checking out the damage. She had red blotches on her neck and her hair was a mess.

"I didn't like that," Adam said.

"Me either."

"Why are those people so crazy?"

"Well," Sam said, trying to come up with a good answer. "I guess they just love Brian and the other guys so much, they'd do just about anything to get close to them."

"Do they do that to Brian, too?" Adam looked worried.

"I'm sure they do sometimes, baby. But Brian has bodyguards to protect him from those people. They can't hurt him."

"Good. I love Brian. Those girls are crazy."

"I love Brian too, sweetheart."

Brian called every single night before he went to bed. He had to tell Samantha he loved her, or he couldn't sleep. He missed her so much, he could barely stand it. He missed her sweet, soft shoulders, the way her hair curled, the way her luminous blue eyes sparkled when they made love. He didn't know how he was going to make it without her on the road with him.

Samantha's first time to meet Brian on the road came three weeks into the tour in Jacksonville, Florida. Brian sent a limo to pick her up at the airport. As soon as she arrived at the hotel, it was pandemonium. When the limo pulled up to the front door, girls began to beat on the glass and scream. When the door opened and they saw that it wasn't one of the Backstreet Boys, they backed away. Unfortunately, at that instant, Nick decided to come out of the hotel, and the pandemonium started all over again. Samantha was being pushed and shoved and her feet were getting trampled. She was getting so smushed, she felt as though she couldn't even breathe. She felt a big hand on her arm, pulling her toward the front door. When she reached the door, she realized it was Marcus, AJ's bodyguard, doing the pulling.

"Sorry about that," he said. "Somebody should have been out here to get you. Somebody screwed up."

"It's ok," Samantha said, trying to catch her breath. She picked up the key to Brian's room at the front desk, and went up the elevator. The floor where Brian was staying was quiet and dimly lit. Samantha opened the door to the room and walked inside. The room was incredible. A king-sized four poster bed with tulle canopy, recessed lighting, a huge marble tub in the bathroom. This place was nicer than just about anyplace she had ever stayed.

She collapsed on the bed and fell asleep immediately from pure exhaustion. Brian didn't come in until after the concert that night. He found her sleeping, and kissed her forehead softly.

"Wake up, baby," he whispered. Samantha opened her eyes slowly, and smiled when she saw him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him.

"I missed you so much," she said, tears spilling even though she tried to stop them.

"I missed you, too," he said, hugging her tightly. "I heard you had a problem coming in. I'm really sorry about that. I've already chewed some asses out about it."

"I'm ok," she said quietly. But truly, she wasn't. Something about the whole thing bothered her.

Brian sat up and pulled his shirt over his head, and Samantha forgot about all of the bad things that had happened that day. She allowed him to remove her shirt, and he held her tightly, his warm chest pressing against hers.

"I could just sit like this all night," she murmurred.

"Me too."

"I love you, Brian Littrell."

"I love you, too," he said, smiling in the dark.
