Chance Encounter

Chapter 5

"Brian?" she said, quietly. He turned to her and smiled. Those sparkly blue eyes. Damn it. Why was she doing this to herself?

"Hey," he said, hugging her. "How have you been?"

"We already went over this the other day. I've been fine. You've been fine," she said, laughing. "Come on. I'll show you my office." I'd like to show you more than my office, little boy, she thought.

Once inside, she closed the heavy oak door. Lila had ordered takeout from a Chinese restaurant a few blocks away, and she had thoughtfully set it out for them on the coffee table by the window.

"So, this is your office?" Brian asked, following her to the window.

"Yep. This is my office," she said, looking out over the city. She had a corner office. Nothing but windows on two sides. Brian put his hands on her waist and turned her around, quickly fastening his lips to hers in a sweet, soft kiss. At first, she didn't return the kiss, but she soon acquiesced. She put her arms around his neck and ran her fingers through the back of his hair. She allowed his tongue to enter her mouth, and she could taste the sweetness of him. His body pressed against hers forcing her against the glass. Her hands dropped and ran down his sides, feeling the warmth of his skin and the firmness of his muscles through the cotton t-shirt. His hands cradled her face gently. She could feel her body melting into a puddle on the floor, and she could also feel his erection pressing against her hip. She was just about to run her hand down his stomach to find out what exactly the package consisted of when her intercom buzzed.

"Samantha, Jeff is on line 3," Lila said.

"Thank you Lila," Samantha said through clenched teeth. Damn Jeff. He always knew how to ruin a romantic moment. She pulled away from Brian slowly.

"Sorry. I have to take this," she said. "As much as I hate to." Brian smiled a little and nodded. She walked to her desk and picked up the phone.

"What do you want, Jeffrey?" she asked, annoyed.

"I want Adam this weekend," Jeff said.

"Why? It's not your usual weekend."

"Damn it! He's my son, too! I don't have to have a reason to want to see him!" Jeff yelled.

"I just asked a simple question, Jeff. You don't have to get defensive."

"I want to take him to Savannah this weekend. It's my mother's birthday," Jeff said, calming down.

"OK. That's all you had to say," Samantha said, sighing.

"I didn't have to say shit, Samantha," Jeff said, snidely.

"Fuck you, Jeff," she said, hanging up. That was usually how they ended their conversations. One of them saying "fuck you" and hanging up. Brian turned to face her. He smiled, embarrassed that he had heard such a personal conversation.

"Your ex?" he asked, looking down.

"Yep. The one and only. Jeffrey Rose. President of the National Organization for Psychotic Assholes and Jerks."

"Sorry," he said. "I'll bet it's hard."

"Nah. I'm used to him by now," she said, laughing. She sat down and opened the one of the containers of Chinese food.

"Sesame chicken? Or would you prefer beef and broccoli?" she asked, smiling up at him.

"Chicken," he said, sitting across from her. She handed him the container and a fork.

After lunch, they talked for awhile. About everything. And nothing. They laughed, and generally had a good time. Brian turned serious for a moment.

"I'm sorry I kissed you earlier," he said, looking toward the window. The same window he had pinned her against only an hour earlier.

"I'm not," she said quietly. He looked back at her, and a slow smile crept across his lips.

"Really?"

"Really."

The intercom buzzed again. "Samantha, your 1:45 is here," Lila said.

"THANK YOU LILA," Samantha said, again, through gritted teeth. She looked back at Brian. "Remind me to fire Lila when I walk you out."

Brian laughed and stood up. She stopped him before they reached the door, and she pulled him to her in a deep kiss. He returned the kiss eagerly. She pulled back and smiled.

"Thanks for lunch," he said, softly, his arms around her waist.

"Maybe we can do it again sometime?" she asked, staring into his sparkling blue eyes.

"Definitely.
