Interviews

Scarling

Interview key: C= Christian resident smart ass-noisy-boy- genius guitarist J= Jessicka patron saint of self injury- basker in the sullen light-singer M= Melanie scarling.'s pretty -friendly - arty-guitarist G=Garey scarling.'s sassy-fashionable drummer Bobby in his "mysterious" fashion couldn't be found for this interview.

My questions are simple:

1.To Jessicka...do you believe that Scarling will make up for the saddening breakup of Jack off Jill after what fans call a masterpiece, Clear Hearts and Grey Flowers, was put out?

J.Masterpiece, wow. that's very flattering. It's never a competition especially when you put your heart and creativity into both projects. Like siblings they are both very special but very different even though they have the same mother. I don't want scarling to try to take the place of JOJ . I'd rather it stand on it's own.

2.Do you believe that Scarling will be a sucess, and why so?

J: I'd never want to say that something I work on is definitely going to be a sucess fearing I may jinx it but am very proud of the work we've done and the songs we've written so I think that in itself is success.

C: I definitely believe scarling could be a huge success. Although with the state of the music industry & by what people are listening to right now we may have to be a small, more underground success for a while. This suits us just fine because we really love the music & as long as our fans can easily have access to it & continue to be into it, we're happy.

G: Success is a funny thing! How do you weigh success? What does it take to feel successful? I think all of the elements are there for people to really adore the music. As a group we're all for the same target. So to some extent I guess you can say our success lies in the hands of the fans.

M: Like Gary was saying, success is such an abstract concept. For me, success is having a great rehearsal and writing a song that gives us all goosebumps. I could really give a if we ever make the cover of Rolling Stone.

3. When do you plan to release the first single or album?

J: We are in the process of pre -production and will begin recording the album next week with my dear friend Mr. Chris Vrenna (Tweaker). So it should be soon.

4.When should us eager fans plan to see you on tour around /So. California?

J:Perhaps sooner then we all expected. We were just asked to do a small tour mid June. (San Francisco-Portland-Seattle-Salt Lake-Denver-Lawrence-Oklahoma-El Paso-Phoenix- San Diego- Lawrence-Dallas- Houston- Orange County- Los Angeles- ) We are hoping that our record will be done by then so it might actually happen.

5.From Scarling, should we expect the sounds to be anything near the style of Jack off Jill?

J: Musically I don't really see that many similarities. There's of course the obvious, my voice but that's about it. As a unit we are more perversely experimental, more distorted, sonically assuming with more bizarre sounds. Sometimes the vibe is a little like JOJ in it's earliest lineup, in that we really enjoy each other's company and writing comes easily. I want everybody else's answers on this one too. It's hard to be objective about your own work plus I'd like to see what they say.

C.I think there are definitely elements of JOJ, mainly because of Jessicka's voice & writing style, but that's pretty much where the comparisons stop. I think Jessicka decribed JOJ as a petting zoo pony & scarling is a flourescent pink zebra running at top speed, that pretty much sums it up except that the zebra may explode at anytime taking whatever & whoever is in it's path with it.

G. Naturally like Christian said, Jessicka's voice will remind people of JOJ ,But Honestly she has a lot of new Tricks up her sleeve! scarling. is on the other end of the teeter totter from JOJ. The music we write is in a different vein completely. I would have to say, within the scarling. vein lies an e concoction of Angeldust and E!!! (Musically speaking of course) ..... So You'll have to be the judge!!

6.What are the basic inspirations of Scarling?

J:Right now- here are the who's and what's that inspire me-Crispin Glover, Mark Ryden, Roman Dirge, Enemy, things that go crash in the dark, LOVE, fashionista, lemons, Sigur Ros', Charlie White, Christian, Garey, Bobby, and Melanie, John Waters, blue pills, Robert Smith (respectively), 3rd degree burns, Kevin Shields, BRMC, the chelsea, natasha lyonne, tweaker, Jennifer Syme,THE MOVIE STORYTELLING, director Todd Solondz, and daytime television (unfortunately)

C: I can't speak for the rest of the band, but as far as music goes it would have to be My y Valentine, PJ Harvey, Sonic Youth, Daisy Chainsaw, Sigur Ros, Sabbath, etc. (you get the picture) Otherwise I think we're all mainly inspired by most of the ty music that's forced down people's throats by the media & the music industry & would like to make music that actually means something rather than just having your concerts sponsored by "chips ahoy" or "pepsi" and trying to kiss someone's ass just to get your next paycheck.

G. My inspirations come from the Tingling up my spine I receive from Any Band, Artist, etc. A lot of my inspirations come from the 80's..... Today the Underground Music and atmosphere is clogged with !! It's more "PC" than ever to be" Underground,Indie, etc." So jump aboard kids!!!!

M:Ummmmmm...inspirations for me change every day. Im really inspired by gloomy weather(not to be supergoth or anything),rain is great for writing. A great live show...who ever it is, gets you all worked up and inspired. Right now Im listening to Rasputina, Im totally inspired by bands with untraditional instrumentation-Brillant!!!

7.And last of all..the simple question...You do know we love you Jessicka, right?

J: No way, but I do now. Thank you everybody for your patience and support of the post JOJ pre scarling. year and a half.
