  • 29 MAY 2004 EHRLICH, Cyril (Piano historian)
    Ehrlich, died aged 78, and who pioneered the economic history of colonial east Africa before embarking on a second career as a historian of the piano industry in Europe and America, and of the music profession in Britain. His writing and generosity with advice inspired a growing circle of younger scholars.

  • 28 MAY 2004 PIERCE, Dorothy (Women's Symphony member) Mrs. Dorothy J. Pierce of Haines City made a living by playing the trombone when she was younger and was a member of the Chicago Women's Symphony. ~ age 74.

  • 27 MAY 2004 SMITH, Ronald (Pianist)
    Pianist Ronald Smith, has died at age 82
    He performed a wide range of music with great distinction, he was particularly associated with the music of the French composer-pianist Charles-Valentin Alkan, a contemporary of Chopin and Liszt.

  • 23 MAY 2004 LEIGH, Adele (Lyric Soprano)
    Adele Leigh, Star at Covent Garden and Vienna Volksoper. ~ Age 75. THE London-born lyric soprano Adele Leigh was a member of the newly formed Covent Garden Opera Company for a decade from 1948. Adčle Leigh, who has died aged 75, was a principal soprano at Covent Garden for eight years, from 1948 to 1956, and was known as much for her personal charm on stage as for her singing.

  • 11 MAY 2004 KNOX, Thomas Powell (Marine Band Composer and Arranger)
    See Washington Post - Washington,DC, Obituary by Patricia Sullivan. Mr. Knox was one of the nation's best-known contemporary arrangers of music for concert band and wind ensembles. ~ age 66.

    Onetime New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra manager. ~ age 68.

  • 09 MAY 2004 YOUNG, Percy M (Elgar Biographer)
    Percy Marshall Young, writer, editor and educationist, b-17 MAY 1912. See Nigel Fortune´s 21 MAY 2004 Obituary in Guardian Unlimited
    The prolific author Percy M Young, age 91, was best known for his books about the life and music of Sir Edward Elgar. Most of Young's more than 60 published works were on music, but a some were on football.
