Jim Varney

A.K.A. Ernest P. Worrell

James Albert Varney, Jr. was born on June 15, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky. At a young age, he was acting in children's theatre. By age 17, he was performing professionally in nightclubs and coffee houses. Instead of moving to Hollywood, he decided to go to Nashville, Tennessee to make it big. In 1976, he married Jackie Varney. They divorced in 1983. He started playing the character of Ernest P. Worrell in commercials. Before long, he started recieving movie offers, such as Walt Disney's Ernest Goes To Camp in 1987. In 1988, he married Jane Varney. They divorced in 1991. In the following years, Jim Varney stared in a number of other Ernest movies, like Ernest Goes To Jail and Ernest Scared Stupid. In 1993, he landed the role of Jed Clampet in the big screen adaptation of The Beverly Hillbillies. During the late 1990's, Jim's career began to slow down. He kept it a secret from the world that he was battling lung cancer due to years of heavy smoking. Jim Varney died at about 4:45 A.M. on February 10, 2001 in his Whitehouse, Tennessee home. He was 50 years old. Jim left behind a legacy of laughter that will last for years to come. Anyone who ever saw an Ernest film will always remember the man with the rubbery face in a grey shirt and tan cap with the denim vests. "KnowhutImean, Vern?"
