Chapter 7

~Brittany’s P.O.V.~

I took Joey to the mall. "The fun begins" Joey said. "Now!" I said I I dragged him inside. "Where do you live, Brit?" Joey asked me. "A block away from Trixie. Meaning three blocks away from you hotel" I smiled at him. "How’d you know we stayed at The Sheraton?" Joey asked. "Trixie told me during our convo last night" I said. "Is Trixie always that shy?" He asked me as we went into The Body Shop. "Yeah. She’s really super shy. And she doesn’t talk unless you urge her to" I told Joey. "I noticed" He said.

"Hey! Lookie who I saw!" Joey suddenly said as he pointed across the store across us. "Maggie, Becca and Kristi! And the other guys!" I almost squealed as we rushed toward them.

"Hey guys!" Justin said. "Kristi, don’t you have a shift today?" I asked her. "No. It’s Kate’s today. Mine’s tomorrow" She answered.

"Are we gonna stand here forever?" Chris asked faking a look of boredom. "Why not?" Becca said. I laughed along with the gang as Chris started to slump down to the floor. "Come on, old man! We have more shopping to do!" Maggie declared pulling Chris up. "What did you just call me?" Chris asked as muffled snickers spread throughout our little crowd. "I don’t remember" Maggie tried to look nonchalant. "Come on, guys! We still have the other wing of this mall to see" Lance said chuckling.

~Trixie’s P.O.V.~

"Hey Harry! Sorry to keep you waiting" JC told the driver. "Where to, C?" Harry asked. "What’s you street called?" JC asked me. "Kahmei Drive" I answered. "That’s two blocks away from the hotel where my bosses stay" Harry said emphasizing the word bosses.

I laughed looking at JC who rolled his eyes.

"What’s that street called again?" JC asked again after a while. "Kahmei. K-A-H-M-E-I" I spelled it out. "Aight" JC said as he coughed. "I still have to work though" I said. "Harry, we’ll drop Trixie off at Paradise café" JC told Harry. "Sure thing, C" Harry said.

I looked back and saw Maureen was gone. JC just watched me with an amused smile. "You didn’t have to do that. I could’ve just walked away" I said softly as we sped down the interstate. "I wanted to" He said placing his hand over mine. "JC" I started to say. "I forgot to ask you one little detail" He said. "Shoot" I said. "How old are you?" He raised his eyebrows. "I’m 18. And you?" I answered. "I’m 25" He said. "Ok" I said quietly.

"Trix, would you go out with me? I hope you don’t mind" He blurted out. "I’d love to" I couldn’t stop it from coming out of my mouth. "Dinner tonight?" He asked. "I’m sorry, I can’t. It’s a school night" I said. "Friday night then?" JC suggested. "Umm...Sure" I nodded.

"Thanks a lot, Jace. That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me" I said as we got out in front of the café. "Anytime, Trix" JC said.

"Trix, I... I don’t know how to say this... I... Ummm..." JC stammered while fidgeting. "Jace, is it that hard for you to say?" I frowned a bit. "Umm, yes" He said. "Why don’t you give it more time. Maybe you’ll find it easier" I suggested. "Thanks" He breathed out. "I have to go to work" I said. "Sure thing" He said. "I...um have to work" I said. "Oh, right" He smiled. I watched the limo go until it was out of sight, then I went round to the back door of the café.

"Hey Julie! Bye Julie!" I said as I passed Julianne, another one of my co-workers, as she walked out of the door. "Hey Trix!" She laughed. She had just finished her shift.

"Hey Kate!" I greeted my co-worker who was already in her uniform. Kate had beautiful hazel eyes and blond hair. "Hey girlie! It’s you and me today" She said cheerfully. "Yup, yup, yup!" I said as I put on my uniform. "Which half do you want?" Kate asked. "Left as usual" I replied. "Ok. I’ll see you outside" She said as she went out.

I grabbed my pad and pen and went outside. "Aloha! Welcome to Paradise café. What can I get you?" I asked my customers.

I heard the phone ring and saw Kate walk over and answer it. "Trix, it’s for ya" She said. "Thanks" I told her as she nodded.

(M: Michael, T: Me)

T: Hello?

M: Trix! Are you busy?

T: I’m at work

M: Mom and Dad had an accident

T: Oh my God! Where are they?

M: I heard they’re in the ICU. We’re all in the hospital

T: I’ll... I’ll be right over

M: We’ll be waiting

T: Bye

M: Bye

I felt my blood drain from my face. "What’s wrong, Trix?" Kate asked me. "I need a really big favor, Katie" I said weakly. "You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What happened?" She asked concerned. "My parents were in an accident and I really need you to cover for me today" I said as tears began to blur my vision. "Of course. And I’m sorry" Kate said hugging me. "Thank you" I said as I began to change into my casual clothes. "Good luck" She said. I nodded in response as she went to attend to customers.

"Saint James Hospital, please" I told the cab driver as I lost myself in my world.

"Thanks" I said as I paid the cab driver and got out. I rushed up the stairs not bothering to take the elevator. I turned sharply at the corner to find my brothers seated, waiting.

"Smile!" Dave rushed to me. "Hey Dave" I said as I bent down to hug him. "Are Mommy and Daddy gonna die?" He asked. It brought new tears to my eyes. "No, Dave. They won’t" I said. "Why are you crying, Smile" Dave asked when he pulled away. "Go play with Matt, k?" I said as I let him go.

"Come here, Babygirl" Ken patted the space between him and Mike on the couch. "Oh guys" I started to say. "Just pray they’re alright, Babygirl" Mike said as he put his arms around me.

I sat there with Mike and Ken, watching Matt and Dave play... and waited.
