April has arrived and the 2014 season has started. It seemed to have gotten here fast yet it seemed to take forever. That doesn't make sense. But that's how I feel. The daily grind of life, work, family, and winter all rolled up in one three month foil ball ending with the Mets final roster moves of spring training. Warm weather in January, personnel changes at work, granddaughter growing like a weed, yet another Michael Schenker tour run in Feb, Walking Dead every Sunday, paying off bills and prepping for retirement this August. But no baseball. Until now.
I started prepping for the season by hitting ebay for some baseball cards in March. I buy most of my set releases from an ebay store BrentandBecca. The look of the 2014 Heritage release is just like the classic 1965 Topps design and I love it. I've decided to try and collect all of the Topps Heritage sets in my retirement years as they are much cheaper than the vintage sets that are not yet in my collection. I could spend many moons just trying to organize what I already have. But with retirement there should be plenty of time.
Many don't give the Mets much of a chance to make the playoffs or even have a winning season. And that's from Mets fans. I think the development of certain players will make the season exciting even if the wins have a hard time out numbering the losses. Something tells me this team will be much different by the end of summer. I'm sure the season would be more optimistic if Matt Harvey was still at the top of the rotation but injuries are what they are. Let's hope that at this time next year Harvey will be ready to take the ball and show the winning intensity that he alluded to in the past. If Ruben Tejada and Ike Davis can perform like they are major leaguers and not major disappointments the season may be much more bearable. Without any pressure on Zack Wheeler maybe he can rise to be the star pitcher that his potential has preceded him. Veterans like David Wright and Curtis Granderson hopefully lead this band of blue and orange to something unexpected. We can only hope and believe. Lets Go Mets!
End of Month Update
I've completed my first month of the 2014 season, April home games are done. My second favorite player Ike Davis, has been traded. But he went out a hero with a game ending grand slam April 5th. I've learned a lot this past month. One thing is that the Mets just may not be as bad this year as they have the previous few. A winning record in April [15-11] is always a good start. Great pitching certainly doesn't hurt. I'm excited to see where the rest of the season goes and rolls into 2015 when I am there to experience Citi Field first hand.
I've also learned that trying to keep up a website/blog takes a lot of work. The easy part yet most time consuming is putting together each game's boxscore. Then writing something interesting [I'll let others be the judge on whether I succeed at that] about the pre-game, game highlights, and my observations. And doing it with proper grammar and spelling, thank God for spell check. I'm hoping that next season I will have more details to write about as watching the games at Citi Field will be a bit better than sitting at my desk in my living room. Thanks to anyone who has taken the time to look these pages over and share my dream.
