New York Mets @ San Francisco Giants 2014
JUNE 6th @ San Francisco Giants
The Mets did not have a baserunner until Curtis Granderson walked leading off the 5th. Andrew Brown then hit into a double play. Ruben Tejada singled to start the 6th for the Mets first hit off Matt Cain. Travis d'Arnaud then hit into a double play. In the 7th Matt den Dekker doubled and Daniel Murphy followed with a home run for the Mets two runs. In the 8th Tejada again singled and d"Arnaud hit into his second double play. That was ALL the Mets offense for the game. Buster Posey's two run shot in the bottom of the 8th sealed the Giants win.
I went with a (Giants fan) friend from work who had never been to a game early for batting practice. Nice seats I got on Stubhub that were about 12 rows back from the field behind the end of the Mets dugout. Field Club tickets get you access to a great food court underneath the stands. I had a triple play [Corned beef, turkey, brisket sliders] that was very good. We had behind the dugout access but no interaction with any Mets, just a nice close view during batting practice.
The Mets were in the lead the whole game until Michael Morse's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. The 7 Line group had a whole section in the upper deck filled with Mets fans. We went up there and I got to talk briefly with a few Mets fans. I also got to briefly met the guy who put together these road trips, I assume he is the main guy behind the 7 Line shirts. A unique story and very cool company making Mets specific clothing. I told him about my planned trip to NY next year, he was very cordial. He said we could join the group and root with the 400 Mets fans but I could not take him up on his offer. My friend Steve [we have been going to games and concerts for 35 years] had picked up tickets for our nearly annual Mets game together. He surprised me with seats in the Lexus Dugout club that is closer to home plate than the players dugout. I caught myself on TV a couple times during the game but managed to not call people on my cellphone or wave excessively at the camera for innings (although I did text). Veteran umpire Joe West was behind the plate. I've had good seats before but never in these awesome seats. I owe my buddy Steve big time for hooking us up with a terrific view of the game. I had the same sliders that I had at yesterday's game.
Before the game, which was Superhero Night, Stan Lee (of Spiderman fame) threw out the first pitch. He was joined by Michael Rooker who plays Merle on The Walking Dead. This is my current favorite show and since we were right by the home plate screen, I staked out the tunnel and tried to get a picture with "Merle". He obliged me but talk about a missed opportunity! We were just inside the tunnel and with no flash on my camera all I got was two shadow faces that were unrecognizable! That was the type of luck the Mets and I had all weekend.
My third game in three days. Went with a friend from church who is a big Dodgers fan. I drove again to the game. Nearly 190 miles each day, 560 for the series. Didn't get home until after midnight Friday and Saturday. I was tired Sunday morning but able to leave early and get to the ballpark a hour and a half before game time. Had a bratwurst for lunch and a hot fudge sunday for my ballpark meal. It was pretty warm (80 degrees) as we sat in the sun most of the game. It was 104 degrees at home so the trip to the Bay Area was nice to escape the valley heat.
Oh yeah, the game. Mets lost. Granderson hit two home runs but I missed his splash hit into the McCovey Cove waters as I was getting ice cream at the time.
