August is my favorite month. Not only is it usually wonderful hot weather, it used to be the last month of summer vacation when I was a kid. Now school starts the second week of August. It is also my birthday month as I will turn "Double David Wright" (55). But the best part of August 2014 is I will put in my last day employed on August 8th. 37 years working and retirement is here. Feels awesome. And somewhat scary too. But I will now not miss the beginning of games at 4pm starts. And I get to see the Mets in Oakland later in the month. With the way the Mets were playing in July I think August just may be a good month all around.
Mid August Update
The Mets are still going nowhere as the dog days of August are half over. New York is 11.5 games back in the division and 7 games back in the wild card. Not the worst team in the league but far from a serious contender. This week the Mets come west to visit Oakland and Los Angeles. I will be at both Mets/A's games. It is so nice that work does not interfere with Mets games now. I have retired from work after 37 years [Have I mentioned that yet?] but I have not retired from being a Mets fan after 42 years.
End of August Update
A frustrating month for the Mets as they went 12-17, but a fantastic month for me. The Mets better play in July did not carry over to August. Lots of new faces are getting a chance to play now. Matt den Dekker and young second baseman Dilson Herrera are seeing a lot of action with Daniel Murphy on the DL, Chris Young released, and Curtis Granderson struggling like he was at the start od the season. Jacob deGrom is pitching well and making a run for the National League rookie of the year. Time to ride out the rest of the year where maybe things can be set up for 2015. Now that I'm home in the afternoons it is great to watch each game from the start but some games just are hard to keep my attention with poor play.
Seeing the Mets in Oakland twice was a treat although they split the two games. So I was fortunate enough to go to five Mets games this year in the Bay Area. The Mets only won one of the five games but it was still fun to be there. I went to the games with five different people and enjoyed the time at the ballparks with good friends. Sitting in the Lexus Dugout at AT&T was awesome and I owe my friend Steve big time for that. Steve also went to one of the Oakland games with me too. Knowing that next year I hopefully attend at least 81 games is still pretty exciting. The wheels are in motion to make that trip a reality.
Nice seats at Oakland August 2014.
