Let's Go Mets! July 30 - HOME GAME #53 vs San Diego Padres (48-53)

Jonathan Niese (5-9) pitches in the series finale against Andrew Cashner (4-8) in an early 12:10 start.

52-50

Lets Go Mets! The Mets built up a 7-1 lead after 6 innings and managed to blow this game. The warm temperature during the game seemed to help the Mets but when thunderstorms rained severely overhead, it only seemed to help the Padres. Jeurys Familia blew his 3rd save since the All*Star game while one strike from victory. Curtis Granderson had two hits, one a HR, scored 2 runs, and drove in 4 runs. He made two great catches in the 8th inning, one against the right field side wall in foul territory and the other minutes later, sliding for the catch in right center. After the 44 minute rain delay and needing one more out to win, Familia gave up a blooper single over Duda's head and another single just out of Ruben Tejada's reach that rolled intro left field. Then Justin Upton took Familia deep through the raindrops over the fence for a HR and 8-7 San Diego lead. After another 2:52 rain delay, the Mets went out in order to give the win to the Padres. The loss dropped the Mets 3 games behind Washington for the 3 game series at Citi Field this weekend.

Game #53 view

What started as a nice warm day and a 7-1 Mets lead turned ugly late with heavy rain and a blown game by the Mets. I didn't get wet however I saw more rain in one July day at Citi Field than I've ever seen in any month of July back home in California. Most fans left during the first delay thinking that the Mets, one out from a 7-5 win, had this game nearly in the books. After the second delay, I was one of only a few hundred fans who stuck around to see a Mets defeat that dropped them 3 games behind Washington.

44 minute delay

The grounds crew does an awesome job of getting the field back into playing shape. The water drains quickly in short left field as the crew removes the tarp. There was so much rain that the drains in the stands started to plug and water creped into the Delta club floor.

2 hour and 52 minute delay

Free car wash

There were very few cars left in the parking lot as the game was about to resume at 6pm. Only a few hundred fans were still around but Mr. Met posed for pictures and David Wright signed autographs for the loyal fans just before the bottom of the 9th continued. Why am I always on the other side of the field when players are signing stuff? I am not a big autograph collector anyway, I would rather have Mets wins. But I was denied today.
