Wheels Of Steel...Princess of the Night...Broken Heros...Crusader...Metalhead. Saxon is one of the true pure metal bands of the NWOBHM. Not as popular as Iron Maiden or Def Leppard but able to put out the bone crushing riffs that make metal in the 80's a classic. They were able to take a wimpy Christopher Cross song, "Ride like the Wind", and make it their own with gusto and a metal edge. Saxon was another of those 80's metal bands that toured their arses off, playing anywhere and everywhere. They were a support band as well as a headliner, sometimes playing small clubs and other times large arenas all around the world. One of my favorites for their riffs and lyric content. The classic Saxon song, "Dallas 1pm" about the assasination of J.F.K. has a historical feel to it with the radio anouncer giving his first hand view of the scene at the grassy knoll. But on other versions without the commentary, the song still holds it's own as an all out rocker. Their songs and lyrics always had that medieval, knights on horseback, castle marauding kind of sound. Yet songs like "Princess of the Night" & "747(Strangers in the Night)" about a train and a plane, still had that Saxon vibe. |
