The Hardest Thing

The Hardest Thing

“This isn’t working out, Perla. I don’t love you. I was just using you. I love Janie,” Jacob said, looking away.

“How can you say that? Why won’t you look at me? Jacob, I want you to look me in the eye and tell me you don’t love me,” Perla said, holding back tears.

“I don’t,” Jacob said, looking at Perla his lower lip trembling. “Janie has been there for me my whole life I can’t just walk out on her. She means so much to me. I don’t want to hurt her Pearls,” Jacob said, trying to keep the tears that were forming in his eyes from falling.

“Jacob, you do love me and I love you. We can be together.”

“No, Perla, we can’t. I love Janie. We’re meant to be together not me and you. It’s always been Jacob and Janie. That’s how’s it’s supposed to be. Perla whatever happened between me and you it doesn’t matter. I love her. Not you,” Jacob said, looking away once again.

“Then, why? Why when you say you don’t love me you can’t look at me?”

“Whatever. If you want me to look at you and say it I will,” Jacob said, trying to gather courage.

“Yes, I do because I don’t believe. You’re just scared because I’m not Janie. You’ve never felt anything for anyone but Janie. Jacob, I love you. I won’t believe you don’t love me unless you look at me and say it,” Perla said, crying.

“Perla, I don’t love you. You mean nothing to me. You were there when Janie wasn’t around. I don’t love you. You were just there to comfort me what we had was a mistake. Did you ever really believe I could love someone like you. You’re nothing compared to Janie,” Jacob said, coldly looking her straight in the eye. The look on her face broke his heart.

“Fuck you, Jacob Underwood. I hate you. I hope you go to hell!” Perla said, sitting down on the couch sobbing.

“I’m sorry, Perla,” Jacob said, reaching out to touch her shoulder.

“Don’t fucken touch me. Go back to the one you love just get the hell away from me!” She yelled him.

Jacob sighed loudly and walk towards the door tears falling freely from his eyes.

“I do love you, Perla. It’s just not right,” Jacob said, softly knowing she couldn’t hear him. He looked back at Perla who was still crying. He wished he could wrap her arms around her. It hurt him knowing that he was the one that caused the pain. He was the reason why the sparkle was no longer in her eyes. Jacob walked out the door and sat on the front stoop still hearing Perla cry. Before he even knew what he was doing Jacob ran back in the house and approached Perla.

“Jacob, get the hell out here!” Perla glared at him.

“No, Perla, I can’t. I do I love you. I’m sorry I know I hurt you. But I am scared. I’m sorry. I just I didn’t want to hurt Janie. I don’t want to hurt Janie. But I can’t just deny what I feel. It kills me to know that I hurt.”

“Jacob, no, you’re right. I was a mistake. Go back to Janie. You belong together.”

“No, Perla, I can’t go back to her. Not when I love you.”

“Jacob, I just. Go back to Janie. Go back to her.”

“Perla, I love you aren’t you listening to me. I wanna be with you.”

“No, Jacob, no. You hurt me and what you said makes sense. I’m a mistake. I was naïve to ever believe that we could be together,” Perla said, trying to stop even more tears from falling.

“Perla, but I want you. I know what I said hurt you and I can’t stand the thought of you not being happy. I do love you and I loved Janie and I thought I couldn’t live without her but the more I think about it you’re the one who I don’t wanna live without. Janie was my comfort. My security. I don’t need security I need you.”

“No, Jacob, you don’t need me. Who’s to say you and I are going to be together forever. It could end in a month and you won’t have your precious Janie as a back up. Just stay with her at least then you’ll know you’re gonna have somebody. You won’t be able to handle me.”

“I don’t need security and you’re right who’s to say we’ll work out. I want us to try. I love you, Perla.”

“Jacob leave. Just Leave. You had it right the first time. We were a mistake. Janie wasn’t around.”

“I don’t wanna leave. I wanna be with you,” Jacob said, looking into Perla eyes.

“Well, I can’t be with you. So leave,” Perla said, standing up.

“Perla, I want you,” Jacob said, standing up trying to hug her. She pulled away doing the hardest thing she’s ever have to do in her life. Perla slapped Jacob.

Hard.

“Get the fuck out of my house, Jacob Underwood. I don’t fucken want you. You think you’re so damn irresistible. You can say what you said to me and think I’ll allow you back with open arms. Well no it’s not gonna happen go back to Janie. I don’t need you!” Perla yelled at him.

Perla remained strong even though the look on Jacob’s face made her want to die. He looked so hurt but she knew she couldn’t cave. He was meant to be with Janie. He knew it deep down inside. His feelings for Perla would soon subside and Janie would forever be in his heart. She knew it and she wasn’t going to be hurt again when he realized it and even if he and Janie were to end her and Jacob would never be able to be together. Jacob had hurt her more than anything when he said those words to her. She could never forgive him for that whether he meant them or not.

Jacob walked out the door with shock written all over his face. He couldn’t believe it. Perla knew she was right to what she did even though it was the hardest thing she ever had to do.

AN: I got the idea for this story from both the song, “The Hardest Thing”, by 98 Degrees, and the scene in the movie “Cruel Intentions”, where Sebastian tells Annette about everything. I love that movie. Well, I hope you guys liked this story, please tell me what you think by either emailing me or signing my guestbook.
