From Spice Girl 2 Solo Singer

The story hit the headlines then a new era started!!

Mel C has quit the Spice Girls. Mel, also known as Sporty Spice has admitted to not enjoying working with the group for the past two years.

Mel's departure puts the future of the band, now reduced to a trio, into question. Mel, 27, said: "I'll always be a Spice Girl but I don't intend to do any more work with the Spice Girls.

"Really, I've not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for probably the last two years. It doesn't really feel that natural to me any more.

"I've grown up and I just feel that I want to do things my own way and not compromise."

Mel -real name Melanie Chisholm- told the Reuters news agency that she and the other three Spice Girls -Mel B, Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton- were now concentrating on their solo careers.

She said: "We were such a huge phenomenon and there's not really anywhere else to go with that. It was a question of sacrificing our lives and trying to maintain the success, or just being honest with ourselves.

"We've all been very honest and all wanted to pursue solo careers.

"We're still linked business-wise and we're still friends but I don't really consider myself to work as a band now."

The Spice Girls first topped the charts in July 1996 with their single 'Wannabe'. Since then they have sold 38 million albums worldwide. Fifth original member Geri Halliwell quit the band in 1998, while the Spice Girls' third album 'Forever' -released last November- flopped.

Then Mel's solo career was born!
