The Weaving Fates (Iron Pegasus~2002)
Prior to hearing this album, all I knew was that Agatus was a "Greek black metal band". Whenever I hear a black metal band for the first time, Iīm worried it will fall into one of two categories: A. Keyboard-drowned crap; or B. Pathetically produced in the interest of being "true". My apprehensions were quickly put aside upon listening to this album. I guess if I had to pick a genre for it, I would choose black metal, but I prefer to think of it as an excellent heavy metal release. Thereīs a lot to like about "The Weaving Fates". The sound is strong without being too polished. The songs are accessible, but not too catchy. Each track has its own flavor while maintaining the overall feel of the album. The vocals are varied, some black, some clean, and even some that sound a bit like power metal. The drumming is interesting throughout with plenty of diversity and imagination. Keyboards are used sparingly, but like everything else on this album, they fit in perfectly. Agatus isnīt the fastest, most brutal or extreme act around, but I hope there will always be room in the metal community for bands that know how to construct and execute great, enjoyable heavy music.
