Lucid Interval (Relapse~2002)
Some music is comfortable. You hear it for the first time and it feels like itīs been with you forever. Such is not the case with this Denver band. It takes many listens to fully digest this album, which is nearly impossible to accurately and completely describe. But Iīll give it a shot anyway. Cephalic Carnage is often categorized as a grindcore band, but this album can hardly be confined to any single genre or definition. Thereīs some death metal, some grind and even a bit of jazz and sludge. The vocals are diversified and are augmented by a series of guest vocalists. Varying speeds, interesting rhythms and structures and even some electronic noise effects are all ingredients of an incredible sonic dish, which is made even tastier by a great production. Like many of lifeīs best journeys, "Lucid Interval" takes you on a ride with an interesting view and plenty of twists and turns.
