Decapitated

Nihility (Earache~2001)

It’s satisfying to see a group of death metal all-stars with a collective half-century of experience and dozens of albums pool their resources and put together a classic release. What’s that? Decapitated is a relatively new band comprised of mere teenagers? And "Nihility" is only their second album? I guess I’ll have to believe what little information I’ve found about these guys, but this album sounds like anything but the work of newcomers to the scene. Each of the eight songs, which are held together by heavy, captivating riffs and played with speed and precision, are excellent. This Polish quartet has done a great job of building on what their death metal forefathers have established. This self-produced album features a powerful sound and arrangements that blend the music and vocals together brilliantly. Classy guitar leads are another nice feature of "Nihility". Though used sparingly, they add to the songs and are much more interesting than the random, hyper guitar squealing we so often hear in this genre. If you’re looking for an album that showcases the best death metal has to offer today and offers a glimpse of what the future may hold, check out this gem.
