The Lament Configuration (Earache~2002)
A band name that conjures images of holiday cheer and peaceful snowfall. An album cover that inspires serenity. Song titles that seem to be thoughtful, yet benign. Don't let any of it fool you. These Nevada boys, under the direction of producer Devin Townsend, grab you in a vice grip and donīt let up until the 10th and final track has left you a battered mess with a wicked grin on your face. This is a grindcore band that doesnīt feel the need to throw in 30-second tracks and jam 30 songs onto an album. The result is a collection of songs with plenty to sink your teeth into and digest. Itīs all propelled by the pained screeching of vocalist Mark Moots. My throat hurts just from listening to him. The drumming of Jason Thomas is fierce yet compelling, with plenty of ear-catching rhythms. Somehow, this quartet manages to maintain a high level of intensity and rage while still creating an interesting listening experience throughout. If this is December, what the hell will January bring?
