Our God Is Lifted Up:
Our God is lifted up
Midst the shouts of joy.
Our God is lifted up
In the sounding of the trumpets.
Our God is lifted up
Midst the shouts of joy.
Shout joyfully unto our God!
Shout joyfully unto our God!
~Tim Smith
The last scene of Luke's Gospel (24: 50 - 52) and the opening scene of Acts 1: 6 - 11. The ascension occurred 40 days after the resurrection (v.3).
Like their fellow country men, the disciples were looking for the deliverance of the people of Israel from foreign domination and for the establishment of an earthly kingdom.
From time immemorial, worship has been characterized by more than singing. In the days of the Old Testament, the people of God came before Him with chants and shouts. They paraded in the presence of the Most High with all kinds of instruments: flutes, lyres, harps, drums, trumpets, cymbals, tambourines. this included rhythmic movements--the lyrics of praise called for both verbal and body language. Championing the cause of God can't be accomplished by offering passive approval for what He has done.
Although our worship celebrations are more controlled and sane than the frenzy of a football game, we have much to learn from those occasions. Lifting up the Lord requires more than lifting up a hymnbook. Let your singing be like joyful shouts to your Lord!
Praise Him with sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre, praise Him with tambourine and dancing, praise Him with the clash of cymbals, praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Psalm 150: 3 - 5
