KY-MANI MARLEY LIVE AT THE KEY CLUB

KY-MANI REVIEW BY JAN SALZMAN

Ky-Mani Marley Sends the Key Club Groovin’

Review by Jan Salzman November 24, 2007 Ky-Mani had added several shows in the Southern California area on the days off from his tour with Van Halen. The chance to see him headlining at this smaller venue was exciting and I had been looking forward to this for about a month, ever since this show was announced.

Marsha and I arrived early for sound check and met the band. Sound check went late. Right up to opening time. We had a bite to eat at the wonderful restaurant at the Key Club and we were set for the evening. Thanks to Josh, Ky-Mani’s road manager, for putting us on the list and okaying the photography.

Opening the show for Ky-Mani was a local band from Riverside, CA named Inhale. They were very popular with the crowd and had quite a following that knew all of the words to their songs. They were excellent. Their genre of music was mainly reggae/rock, peppered with a little bit of punk/jazz/ska. Some of their most popular songs were, “That’s Life,” “Time Served,” “Don’t Take” and “Laughing.”

A beautiful female rapper came on with Ky-Mani’s band before he took the stage by the name of Soul Flower. She wrapped very conscious lyrics really getting the crowd ready for Ky-Mani’s new style of music. She did a great job.

Ky-Mani took the stage by storm with an impeccable backing band and two beautiful and talented back up singers (Jasmine and Stephanie). His opening song was “I’m Back” from his new CD “Radio.” He went straight into “The March” after that. I didn’t get a set list but his show was so memorable that I can recall almost every song that he did, although I don’t remember what order he did them in. All-in-all he did approximately nine songs from “Radio.” He wowed the crowd with his magnificent stage presence. The man works hard! He spent most of his time with his microphone in hand dashing back and forth across the stage with very rap-like hand gestures. He seemed very happy with the evening’s performance, often smiling. The audience agreed, knowing the words to his songs and waving their arms.

He also did several of the songs from his CD, “Many More Roads,” in a medley and he interspersed several of his father’s songs throughout the set including “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” “No Woman No Cry,” and “I Shot the Sheriff.” When he performed “I Got You” he featured Stephanie on the female vocals, and he featured Jasmine on “The Conversation.” Both girls did an excellent job. Their voices are incredible. The audience’s response when he did his hits “One Time” and “Hustler” was overwhelming.

Of course, he was brought back on for an encore, which started off with the very sexy “Slow Roll.” Ky-Mani ended the night’s fabulous show with “One Love,” which represented the great vibe of the night.

We mingled with the band for awhile after the show. Kavayah brought us through the backstage exit and walked us across the street to the bus. We relaxed for a little bit with the band before going home. All of these folks are amazingly friendly and warm-hearted.

Check back more photos will be added including photos of "SOUL FLOWER", who opened for Ky-mani.
