D-087 notes
-06 Anyone know who "Billy Cullen" is?
-10 This is Billy Costello, later the original cartoon voice of Popeye
also on D-082 which I think I sent earlier. This is a different transfer and may sound better
-20 This mid-40s item is the only Slate record I've ever seen. The label was based in Newark, NJ. It requires an extra-wide stylus. #20 must have been one of the first songs written about Frank Sinatra
-22 A late 1940s attempt to do what "David Seville" did more effectively a decade later with his Chipmunks. Gene Carroll made a few records around 1930 as a straight pop singer, and as half of the duo Gene & Glenn. Animal Records was based in Cleveland (where the Gene & Glenn records were cut)
and I have several others if anyone's interested.
Like many records in my stacks this originally belonged to an L.A. radio station. Someone had scrawled DO NOT PLAY in crayon across the surface of this side and you can occasionally hear the residue.
The chorus of this song ends with the line "I'll spend my life loving you." The first time through, it almost sounds like they're singing something unbroadcastable instead of "loving."
-27 Tom Lehrer recently recorded this song himself for the Rhino box set coming out next year. In the meantime, enjoy this version from a Garrison Keillor broadcast.
