THE ESSENTIAL BILLY MURRAY

including AILEEN STANLEY and THE AMERICAN QUARTET
assembled by DR. DEMENTO

The first three Billy Murray discs will be in the mail to you today. These are Victors from 1903 to 1915. Looks like I'll have 7 or 8 discs of
Murray, covering around 2/3 of what I have. That will still be just a fraction of what he recorded! The majority of his biggest "hits" will be
included, and hopefully the missing ones can be located somewhere else to make a truly representative collection someday. (I'm not sure we should even aspire to a COMPLETE collection!)

I've also got a full disc-plus worth of the American Quartet, and will toast those separately.

These may be better appreciated a few at a time. What's monotonous about them is not Murray so much as the accompaniment! Discs #1 and #2 have quite a few Broadway numbers, and #2 has a couple from the Chicago musical theatre as well. Chinoiserie alert: #22 on disc three. #25 on disc two is a coon song; Murray recorded relatively few of these compared to his contemporaries. #17 on Disc One has the original "rag" lyrics, later altered. Listen to #21 on disc one and ponder how much, and how little, college life has changed since 1906.

Disc Three has fine period pieces at #15, #17 (feminism), #18, #21 and #23.#20 says some of the same things about life in the new 20th Century that pundits are now saying about life in the 21st. #08 is an especially nice comic song.-   barry h. (February 23, 2000)
